That depends on what you plan on keeping. What is your plan for your tank? Corals? What types?

well im just starting so i dont want to push my self. i am looking for a bigger tank so that is the one i want to put the reef and corals in . but for the tank i got now with the live rock should i be use a curtin type of light

If its going to be a "fish only" tank than regular PC lights are fine, may even work for some soft corals. Anything more in that tank and you will need T5 or MH lighting. Just my opinion though. Again what are you trying to keep in your tank?

AS for lighting and a bigger tank you can find great deals from members right here on MR. The city's best LFS;)

thats for sure.

Throw some zoos in the tank maybe. Totally easy to keep and you can get a feel for caring for corals. Also you can see if your butterfly has a taste for them with a relatively cheap coral.
