That also goes with your denitrator. If your macro algae is taking all the nitrates, then you technically don't need one either. But it seems as you have great growth on your macroalgae, so perhaps the denitrator is not out competing the macro.

It would be a good test to conduct though :)

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. :splitspin

I doubt highly that the macro is taking it all... I think my Co2 levels and high light keep the macro growing strong..

My media was tumbling all along, even with a 606 mini jet that i had previously attached. I just didnt know if what I was experiencing was considered a true "tumble" I mean, from what I posted in that guys video, that looks more like slight perculation, verses a tumble in my mind. I was envisioning the media to be swirling around in the chamber.

Just an off the wall guess here.....is it possible you guys that are getting zero tumbling action have the feed pump plumbed into the wrong fitting on the reactor? The supply line to the reactor is supposed to be connected to the elbow that attaches to the long tube going to the bottom of the reactor.

Just a guess because it doesn't take much flow to get the Phosban tumbling. We use a minijet 404 and that is more than adequate. We even have to dial it down.

Mine is plumbed correctly Russ :)..curious to know if you are saying the entire load of GFO should be moving?

Nope. Just the top 1/2"-3/4" of GFO should be tumbling. Like DJ said, the video looks like it's percolating. IMO that is a bit too much flow. The constant aggressive agitation of the media could cause it to degrade and break down over time. This degradation can be as much as turning the GFO into a fine powder and allow it to return to the display tank. That could result in a disastrous crash.

HTH a bit,

Russ, does dissolved GFO in the tank actually harm anything? I remember when phosban first came out, I used to put it in my sump without rinsing it. My tank would turn orange for an hour but the corals seemed fine. The skimmer and carbon cleared it up pretty fast though.

Rich, I've heard of tanks actually crashing due to GFO covering coral. Used properly I've never heard of any problems. However, using it without following the correct methods preached by most folk here I've heard of catastrophic problems ensuing. As I said, I can't speak from experience with regards to the problematic methods, but the resulting problems make sense when used improperly. I mean it is Ferric Oxide. Not something we dose or find in sea water as a trace element ;)
