I had one. It was great, kept my fish only tank so clean. There were some corale in there that I put in because they were out growing the 24 pod and because they were encroaching on other stuff in the pod and he bulldozed right through them making himself a nice "cover." Also kiss all Coraline goodbye in a small tank! They will eat it! Besides being bulldozers and eating coraline they are great animals.
I have 2 they are great, did a number on my 55g before i switched. Had so much coraline and they tore it up. I may have to get rid of them though as the new tank has very little rock and no coraline. Dont want them to starve.
I love my tuxedo urchin. It doesn't make a dent in any algae that grows on the glass, doesn't touch Caulerpa, but it doesn't reduce the coralline, does knock things over at times, and carries mushrooms on its back like parasol's.....its always in view, except when I clean the tank and it surprises me by poking my fingers...what a joy...but you gotta love something like that.
Good points: Eats algae like crazy, interesting to watch-always looks different depending on what its carrying. Good tank cleaner.
Bad points: Bulldozes corals & eats coraline.
I had mine about 2 years & then it died.
Alex, you have a large tank, it would be fine there.
They get a bad rap as far as moving corals around but is more gentle when it comes to that than other types of urchins. As far as removing coralline algae I wouldn't know because I still have to scrape it off the glass myself:lol2:
They do carry stuff that is loose around the tank in order to camouflage themselves from what I read. Mine carries around this ball of cheato
sorry for not being around after i posted been busy, however it would seem that if i intend on getting one i better start tying things down.
beautiful animal though. saltaternoob thanks for the post.
