It varies greatly, at least in NYC (my only experience). I know my friends who work on Staten Island could go to court with a piece of toilet paper and still beat the motorist!

Cops who write speeding tickets have extra training for it, so we rarely get beat on that one at least. Like I said, I still suck on most others :)!

When you come up to the sticks it's totally different. The villages and towns just use the summons as cash cows. I've seen state troopers in court pull out 18-24 people at a time ask them to plea down to the same minor infraction (i.e. parking on the sidewalk and pay $250) What pisses me off is that they let the real speeders get away with this sh*t. I can understand if you get nailed for doing 72 in 65 on the thruway but I've seen people get the same treatment for doing 63 in a 35.

And BTW what with the BS of automatically writing a ticket for 20 mph over the speed limit so that it's a mandatory court apperance. I got nailed a month ago for coming down the helix at the Lincoln Tunnel for doing 55 in 35. I know damn well I was only doing 45. Basically a speed trap---> Officer with radar standing on the side half way down the hill. Other Officers waiting at the bottom at the toll plaza pulling people over. When I questioned the speed written I was told that they can't catch everybody. What kind of BS is that?

Anyway they spelled my last name wrong on the ticket? Is that grounds for dissmissal. I actually missed the first court date because I thought it was junk mail and threw out.

I was always curious how cops can pinpoint which car their radar detector measured when the traffic is denser. Can the boys in blue comment on that one? The only speeding I ever got was a few years ago in LA on vacation. The officer claimed I was going well over 90 when he got me to slow down. Mind you this was in rush hour traffic on an LA highway. I originally thought I was being pulled over for crossing a solid white line ( HOV lane ). My wife gets queasy if I go 70, let alone 90+. I asked him if he was sure I was the car that he measured and he stated " You're the only white Toyota Camry on the road. " I've never been able to take care of that ticket because the handwriting was illegible and never had luck getting through to a live operator in the LA court systems until over a year later after it was sent to collections and its just been bounced around since then. Talk about frustrating. I cant go back to LA until I settle it.

Another question I always had was about the logic of making radar detectors legal ( I know in many states they are not ). AFAIK their only purpose is to allow illegal activity ( Disclaimer: I'm not bashing anyone for using them nor am I claiming to be a perfect driver, its just an honest question ).

Well I can only speak for one type of radar, but the radar doesn't really matter. What actually matters is the officer's observation. You'd be very surprised how easy it is to estimate how fast a car is traveling with very little special training. I look at each car, make an estimate, and then point the radar at the ones I think are speeding. Legally we have to be within +/- 5mph, but I can usually get within 2mph, depending on the speed (I am actually better with higher speeds). So I know exactly which car I am pointing at because I already know they are speeding.

Furthermore, I don't need the radar to write the summons because of that training. I can write on estimation alone, but have only done it once and only because the guy was speeding while doing something else (which I intended to write him for), but since he cursed me out, I wrote the estimation also (I won both).

Just a little tip by the way (which you all already know, but its worth repeating)... every car stop for me is potentially my last, so I don't make them for no reason. If you have my lights in your rearview mirror (or those of most other cops), 99% of the time, you did exactly what the cop is about to accuse you of and 2-3 more things, so unless you want all 3-4 summonses, relax, take your ONE summonses and try to drive SAFER next time.

can i ask a question to the police officers on this site.do u go easier on a working man opposed to a wealthy guy driving a mercedes.and if a person is speeding does it help to hit the brakes 50yds when u notice a cop car or do u already have them on radar.i hate driving and seeing someone slam on brakes when they see a cop car.

I'm sorry and let me preface that I am a big supporter of law enforcement with many friends and family in the field but... there goes that god complex

you did exactly what the cop is about to accuse you of and 2-3 more things, so unless you want all 3-4 summonses, relax, take your ONE summonses and try to drive SAFER next time.

That's total cop bs. Cops are humans they aren't robots.

Zany,
The only way I have ever beaten a highway cop is by showing up to court with a fellow highway cop. You would be amazed at how fast those impeccable notes that the officer keep get lost.

Also for anyone getting pulled over give the Officer the courtesy of shutting your engine off and turning on all interior lights if it is dark out. You would be amazed at how a little understanding will get you a warning and good evening.
