I need to put up a shelf thats 17" deep to hold my DVD player. I need to use a wood shelf but the only complete kits are glass so I went with an unstained edge glued panel. The problem is finding brackets long enough. The longest ones I've found at the local HD and Loewes have been 6-8" long. Anyone have suggestions?

that should be long enough if you are screwed into beam or if you use expandeble mollys.

I plan on drilling into the studs if they arent too far apart. If I can't use the studs, you think mollys in the sheetrock will be enough for a 6-8" bracket on a 17" shelf? I'm no hardware expert but it just seemed to short to me.

Each molly should support abou 30-40 lbs.
DVD players are only usually about 7-8 lbs. And all of that weight wont be on the front of the shelf.
PS. Be sure you drill holes to get the corresponding wires through the shelf, if needed

Jet,

HD and Lowes have finished "floating" wood shelves like this.

BLACK_LEDGE_BEAUTY-_web.jpg

They come in different styles and sizes. These are great because you can put them anywhere on a wall and still catch studs. I have three of these in my daughter's room. One of them is holding up the dyd and cable box and her Ipod boom box.

My wife ended up buying them online tho. I'll ask her when she gets home where she got them from.

The problem with those floating shelves is they arent deep enough. The DVD player is 17" deep plus an inch to let the cables through the back ( plus the xbox on top of it which adds weight ). I'll try the mollies or screw through the studs if they are in the right spots. Thanks for the advice.

guilty of not RTFP- I didn't see that you had already purchased shelving.

When you say unglued wood panel, is it a solid piece of wood? How thick?
