I love this recession
So far I love this recession. A few weeks ago I bought a car. It was a GM and it cost $34,000. They took $10,000 off and another $1,600 off for coming off a lease and gave me free oil changes for life, free mobil phone for a year and a $200.00 gift certificate for Best Buy. I think if I would have asked for a Hawaiian vacation, they would have thrown it in.
Today I did my once a year run out to buy my wife some Christmas presents. I went to Lord And Taylor because she likes that store and we have three of them here. The place was empty.
Almost everything in the store is 40% off, then I had a coupon for another 25% off and I signed up for a credit card and got another 15% off. The credit card I throw away as soon as it arrives so I got 80% off. The best part is I get to walk around with a Babe salesgirl.

I'm still trying to figure out how this is a present for your wife.:lol_large

Rick,

You have no idea how many legal immigrant union workers are doing just that. They come here working for six months at a time just to send the money back home. You take just 12 guys at six months wages you're talking about $250,000 taken out of the economy not being spent. Never mind that unions have no problem sending a retirement check overseas.

To be fair, once you earn your buck, you can spend it any legal way you'd like. Its no different than all the American tourists who spend their money in other countries rather than in-country trips. Also, don't forget that even illegal aliens ( I'm not weighing my opinion on them being here or not or whatever, just making a point to be fair ) spend money here and from what I learned way back when in Economics, spending money benefits the economy. So if a guy is here legally, working legally, paying taxes, and everything else legally, then let him send his money wherever he wants. He still pays rent in the US, buys food in the US and pays US taxes. I imagine that quite a few members here would here similar stories from their grand or great grandparents.

Now back to topic, Paul its great that you're benefiting from the current crisis but its a little tackless considering how many people are having crises now. Its kind of like throwing a big party at your house when half your neighbor's just lost theirs to a fire.

What post are you talking about?

I worked on Copaxone too. The same company who makes copaxone has a couple of more drugs coming out. There is also a drug coming to market that treats the symptoms of MS as you described. It has shown to increase walking distances with less energy loss. Treatment gets better every day so I think your wife should be fine in the long run. I sponsor many MS walks and events. Breast Cancer is another one I sponsor alot.

I applaud your Santa Efforts with the sick children. That is something I don't think I could do. I agree children are the most important thing for anyone. Even us people who don't have any of our own :)

Dom can you take my pharm exam for me ? Or maybe make me a nice cheat ( i mean study ) sheet?

Paul, I like you. You sound like a good old-fashion American who tell it as it is without sounding judgmental. Some people might not get you, but I get you.

i totally agree with the ending statement cause im 1 of those guys whos house was burned down "not literally"
as for the first statement, illegal immigrants do not pay taxes.of coarse they spend money but they spend as little as they can to get bt som they can send the rest back to whever they came from.i lived in brooklyn and i first hand see how these people live.10 to 20 men in a rent controlled apartment.and as for the mexican illegals on the farms in long island the owners usually have some sort of shack or small house that they all live in and there kids go to the schools at another tax payers dollar.as for my living i am a union ironworker.u have no idea how they are pricing us out of work.do u know they are now building sections even whole structures overseas and all the workthat is left for us is to set the couple of pieces which is a few days worth of work.all to make a rich man even richer.no wealth shareing which is what made this country what it is.and the steel is made elsewhere.that jamaica station project whicj all u.s. tax payers paid for all the steel was made in korea.a state project.

:lol2: I'm sure you know the science better than me :)

If you want to see a good show on illegal immigrants try and find Penn & Tellers BullShit. It was hilarious. They discussed some of the common beliefs but the part about building a wall was a riot.

I give up

Don't sweat it Paul. It is real easy for people to judge based on a post or thread versus actually getting to know someone before developing an opinion. One of the greatest lessons I've learned is "Try and understand why people are who they are". Anyone who knows you like me would understand where you are coming from and know you meant no harm to anyone else. Actually, you probably care more than most.

At the same time, with any sensitive issue, there is going to be some folks who take it personally and that is understandable too.

I give you credit Duke. I hardly sleep worrying about the job I have let alone if I didn't have one.

Hell, maybe MR is a good place to network for jobs. I know I'm constantly hiring folks to work from home to help out with recruiting research participants. Its not a ton of money but it's definitely better than nothing :)

OK I was going to call it:
I know the recession stinks but there are some good deals out there. But I thought it was too long to fit in that little box.
I also know about that waiting on line at the union hall, as I said, I was out for 14 months, 7 months and 6 months along with the month and a half every year since 1974.
But we all have to buy stuff weather we want to or not and now because of the recession, some stuff is cheaper. I had to buy a car and it was $10,000.00 less than it would have been last year.
I diden't have that money either, it came out of my pension. My pension is less than
$400.00 a week. I just put in a stair lift for my Mother n law which was about $3,000.00. It was a necessity or I would be carrying her up the stairs. I took it out of my annunity which is supposed to pay for my retirement.
Someone on here said that they are working hard to pay for my pension. What do you think I was doing for 40 years?
I do side jobs whenever I can of we would not eat. My pension barely covers my real estate tax.
A pension is not a gift, I worked very hard as a construction electrician in Manhattan and have the 4 knee operations to prove it.
I do know it's tough, it's tough for all of us. That is also the reason I put solar panels on my house, to cut the power cost.
I also know it's Christmas season. I am going out now to play Santa for kids that are dying, they have bigger problems than all of us.
Take care and have a great holiday
Paul

is that a dig.listen i wake up at 5am to get to my union hall every morning.i get home usually around 9:30am.that is my job hunting.i am not an office guy who can put resumes out and go from office to office handing them out.what ,should i be looking for a job at mcdonalds.this is my career,im a ironworker.when u are out of work do me a favor dont look for a job in your field start over and do something different.you dont think that this is on my mind every minute of every day.of course i would work doing side construction jobs like sheetrock or carpentry which i usually do anyway even when im doing ironwork but there is nothing going on right now.the guy i help out from time to time doesnt even have enough work for his regular crew.so to keep me sane and so im not so worried yeah i turn to my hobby.

I was out of a job after Sept. 11 for almost two months with no clue what I was going to do next. I took a job on a cosmetic assembly line for a month at minimum wage to make ends meet. I was lucky enough to be able to return to my original job. That was ceretainly not my career but it was what I had to do. My Uncle is currently unemployed with 4 kids (one of which is a tenage mom). He works construction. He turned down a desk job because it wasn't his career. Well, now his kids are bouncing from home to home and he has no place ot live and is milking money from his 87 year old wheelchair-bound mother.

No I wasn't taking a dig at you at all. But since you are voicing your opinion I decided to voice mine.

well thats good for you but some guys dont have someone to call them when there job is starting again.if we dont go to the union hall every morning we dont get a job.i cannot work for minimium wage it wont even come close to my monthly expenses so i CHOOSE to stay on my unemployment insurance which i have been paying into for 15 years.and sept 11th was a different story there was still other jobs to find during that time it wasnt a recession where no companies were hiring.it was only the companies in the general area that shut down.and it sounds like your uncle was a non union construction worker which worked off the books.cause if he was union he would have had savings he could have dipped into to keep his family safe for a while and even if he had savings that got tapped his union would have found him something if he went to them and claimed poverty.im not in poverty im just having trouble with the extras a growing family wants.christmas is tough, buying thew things my kids want like the snacks and new clothes is tough.having our cell phones and keeping them kept on is tough.i will not lose my house and i will keep all the necessities going.thats what being a union man is all about.so to say go find a minimum wage paying job when unemployment pays more is not a smart decision

Well it sounds like you are protected and in better shape than others. People are losing their homes left and right and out on the street. They are not worried about keeping cell phones active. They are worried about keeping their home.

My only point is clearly Paul wrote about his current situation. He didn't comment on anyone else's. Everyone's situation is different. Paul has to be careful what he writes because it offends you but you can knock a McDonald's job because you don't need it. Well, there is people out there who need that Mcdonald's job or others similar.

I feel for you in your current situation. Like I mentioned earlier, I wouldn't know what to do. At least you don't have to worry about losing your home.

A thread pointing out all of the great recession deals is not a bad thing. Maybe it will motivate people to go out and spend. Even people who are doing fine financially are afraid to spend money because of everything they are hearing on the news.

If anyone is out of work they should want people to buy up all of these recession deals. It means less companies going under and less people out of work.

someone who is working for mcdonalds are living in there means for the pay they make.i live in my means for what i make.when that steady income is gone what your use to live like needs to change.you cant go from making the money i make then go to a minimum wage job you will lose everything you worked for all those years.do you think if a lawyer who makes 300,000 a year can live the way he lives with my salary.and of course i have to worry about losing my home.ive been out of work for 1 month if it goes for a longer period of time i will need to worry about those things.the whole purpose of me saying what i did is the title is offensive.what if i put a title "im glad i have legs" and in the thread i was to write i can walk around outside today its beautiful and warm.yeah im writing in the thread about me but u dont think 1 person out there will be offended he will complain and that thread would have been deleted.whats the difference they are both classless titles to a thread

what the f@#$%.hey man u had a good time spending money so keep it to ur self.ive been out of work for a month now and its not cool hearing someone say "I LOVE THE RECESSION"" i have 2 kids a mortgage and christmas coming in which i have to dip into my retirement savings to make this a good christmas for them.paul i love seeing your threads on ur old tank but come on there are alot of people that are not as lucky as u.

The title is not a good representation of the intent of the thread. I agree with that.

But you are also saying he shouldn't be able to talk about the money he spent and the deals he got because it's not sensitive to someone else's situation. Then I guess we should also delete the entire marketplace on MR too while we are at it. The bottom line is times are tough for a lot of people right now. In fact, there are always people suffering from hard times regardless of the state of the economy.

As Wes wrote, people spending money is what is going to bring this economy back. I wish there were more people buying cars right now. Especially GM cars. A lot of folks wouldn't be losing their jobs and pentions at the moment.
