Paul - that post makes me cry.

As far as good holiday deals, I bought Jer silver collar stays for Christmas. The jeweler called to tell me they were in. Our coversation went like this:

"Hi Leslie. This is Lisa over at XYZ Jewelers. Your collar stays are now in stock. Would you like to confirm the engraving?"

"Thanks Lisa, I am really happy and suprised that you were able to get them in stock over night! The engraving in correct. Can you tell me the total cost?"

"Let's see....OK, you said you want a discount Miss Sturdavant? Well, I can give you the stays for 25% off and I'll give you 10 free letters on the engraving."

(picture me confused but delighted to be given a discount that I didn't even ask for)

"That sounds great! I'll pick them up on Saturday."

I took a job on a cosmetic assembly line for a month at minimum wage to make ends meet.

That is really interesting. You don't find many people with assembly line experience in NY!

My mom made me work on an assembly line every summer that I was in college. It definitely taught me the value of $$$ and an education. Unemployment in Michigan is usually around 9% so many people support their families on about $7/hour. With 2 wage earners that is about $30,000 per year.

After college, I spent some time horsing around and then couldn't find a job when I was finally ready to get one. Back to the assembly line with me :-( This time I was living in Detroit. I ended up hemming pants in an inner city factory. People there sold food stamps for 80 cents on the dollar and used the money to buy crack. When Christmas rolled around, the people who didn't smoke crack, sold it to raise money for presents. I finally quit when a guy (who had always been really sweet to me) brought a machine gun and a couple of buddies to work to kill a black guy who was dating a PR girl.

Sorry, this is a little off topic from great holiday deals - unless you consider the food stamp deflation :)

I don't know if there is a topic here but I installed one of those stair lifts in my home last week to get my Mother n law up the stairs, I did it for me too or she would never go upstairs :shhh: (I would like to make it go upstairs faster and downstairs much slower )
Even that thing was on sale for almost half price. :tongue1:

I'm guessing the cosmetic assembly line was for Estee Lauder out in Melville.
Almost got a job with them back when I was unemployed. They pay very very well if anyone is wondering.

 I thought things ere supposed to be fixed after Nov. 4th.

Paul I agree with you on lots of things you have said and I don't agree with others however let me just say it is refreshing to find someone who stands by their convictions and supports American workers.

Like I said recession = job security for me. I hate to keep saying it but it's the truth. But if put in the position that others have been I would do any job to put food on the table no matter what it is.

And I agree with something else that Frank said and will equate it this way If you don't like the TV show change the channel.

Lissa, Are you coming diving in the Sound this year? I have enough equipment. (You just have to pay for half the years boat dockage :shhh:.
Well maybe not, but if you buy the boat, No forget that, I will give it to you. It has been for sale for years.

I would love to, but it is too coooooooold for me right now. :) I'm actually thinking about going diving when I'm in Northern California for Christmas. I have to see if the shop I've used there in the past is running any boat trips as I am not big on shore diving.

be adventurous! now is the best time to dive around New York!
visibility is at it's best!

nothing like diving dry! DUI makes a great crushed neoprene dry suit, very comfortable warm and comfy and very easy to get in and out of

I used to love diving this time of year unfortunately it was always work related

I'm already certified for drysuit and nitrox. :) And yes, the pacific is colder than the Atlantic. I dive dry there too. I see people in 7mil wet suits in December and I think they are crazy!!

jeez there is a C card for dry suit???:shocked1:
wow I must be getting old I can understand nitrox

we had a guy try out for the dive team he had about 10 C cards
it was funny he couldn't find the bottom if we tied an anchor to his butt:lobster:

needles to say he never made the team

Frank, I'm only PADI open water certified, but I can easily see why there would be a need for a dry suit C card. There has to be some big bouyancy differences than with just a BC. I'm not sure about it because I've never dived dry, but it's just a hunch.

Its not just the buoyancy but also learning how to manipulate the air in the suit to help you ( i guess that's included in buoyancy ) achieve proper stability, posture, etc.

I'd just like to say that it is never a good idea to read a long, engrossing thread while siphoning water out of your tank during a water change. I had a more relevant thought, but lost it during the panic creating by splashing sounds coming from the floor.

not a big deal to learn or become accustomed to diving in a dry suit
I never got a C card to dive in my dry suit does that mean I cant buy one or dive in it?

I love diving dry! I also like diving with an AGA mask I can chew gum, cough drop, talk throug communication.
it takes some practice to buddy breath and i realize not practical for the avg sport diver

When I got my card, there was only one card.
It certified you for everything. Usually I dive on my own boat but if I need to go somewhere to dive and someone has to check my card, they say, I never saw a card like that. I think it just says Basic SCUBA diver or something like that which was the only card there was in the seventees. I tell them I am certified to dive with anything.
So far no one questioned me.
