Help. Salt To Fresh Water...

ok unfortunetly i know nada about fresh water tanks... i recently broke down my nano and was going to sell it till my wifey last nite said she wanted to keep it and make it a lil fresh water tank with glow fish and neon tetras and what not...

does anybody know if there is anything i should do to the tank before putting the fresh water in?

best temp. for tetras and fish of that sort?

what should the PH stay at?

any tips and pointers on fresh water is greatly appreciated thanks eddie

Well there isn't much more of a difference between the two of them...
cycle time for bacteria to establish, PH.... maybe more of an importance on fish like discus.
Keep the tank at 76-78*f. Tap water or filtered water will suffice.

if using tap water, make sure it is aged. Glow fish looks good under lite actinics.

thanks guys i will be using ro/di water and i picked up a nice fw light fixture for my nano tank... i basically know how to cycle the tank as for its basically the same as salt water tanks... the only home work i have to do now is what do i keep the PH at for glow fish and tetras???

Glowfish... are inbred dyed tankbred fish. Don't put too much thought into them. Tetras are hardy fish and can withstand PH differences without going into shock. As long as they are acclimated properly they will be tolerable when it comes to PH.
So anything along the lines of 6.5-7.2 will be fine for them.

Neon tetras are hardy fish.I was thinking about seting up a 33 gal.with about 50 or
so .They are always available and cheep 3 for $5 or so.Put the neons in first.I think they do better in schools.You might want to add a placo to eat food that fall to the bottom neon tetras are mid water feeders.You can add some live plant.I am not an extert.Good luck.

correct, they were originally engineered to test water quality in streams and water treatment area. they were nuke before release to the public to make sure they cannot reproduce. glo3 and glo5 are my preference.

FW is easy peezy. Are you going to get a planted tank?

Also if you get Driftwood make sure you "cure it" meaning that the stuff that seeps out discolors the water... make sure it's all out.

Tetras are super hardy you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

The fish there are tropical so they like water temperature similar to saltwater maybe about 75 though.

You can use Blue LED's for Glofish, it'll really pop.

thanks for everyones advice so i can use the neon tetras to cycle the tank which is kool....

ok kool so wingo 5.0-7.o on the ph ... got it... next week i will have the tank set up and a few fish to start the cycle...

aznt after the cycle and maybe a month or so later i will have it planted.. im not planning on using driftwood but thanks for the heads up... i was actually going to try slate rock... the marble type and a broken down ship.... hahaha


also about the glo fish... when i was up at mystic aquarium in ct not too long ago there was a 15-20 min class on them they were saying something to the sort that they extracted the glow out of jelly fish and injected them in the eggs of the the glow fish...

im going to google that see what i can find on that...

Eddie, if memory serves me right if you use ro/di water for fw tank there are additives that you have to add to their water. I don't recall what it was, but please do a search on it.. I always used tap water for my fw tanks and never had an issue.

This is how set up fresh wate tanks, just clean the tank as normal fill it with tap water, add water conditioner wait 48 hours, add fish and enjoy. You've already gotten the Para down, so no need to go there.

+1 On the RO/DI. Not good for fresh water fish because its Stripped of some Nutrients. I have been doing fresh water for 20+ years and have always used unfilterd tap water right out of the Python.. You dont really even have to let it sit. Just be sure to use cold water, as to not pick up any bacteria from your hot water system.
Also make sure your water temp is good before you add fish.
The fish you are talking about are not hard to keep. If you were talking about German Blue Rams or, as stated in a previous post, Discuss you would have more to worry about with cycling the tank and such.
Remember to wash your gravel well, use Carbon to keep tank clear and change frequently. You should also use a little "aquarium salt" or kosher salt. About a tablespoon per Gallon. this cuts down on parasited and increases Gill Health.

it's better u start from beginning if it will become a planted tank as setting up the substrate is easier without fish and old gravel.
pay attention to the substrate as in this tank. 3.5 inch subtrate is no easy thing when you have fish there already

Eddie, if you are going to do a planted aquarium reach out to me. I think I have some substrate left from when I had my planted aquarium. It's old, but you can bring it back to life.

BTW, now you got me thinking of turning my little 20 in my room into a planted tank. No worries on carrying buckets of RO/DI water up the stairs.lol

the only question im still pondering is what do i need in order to keep the plants alive? are there any additives i should put or do they feed on the fishy kahki... poop?

I ASKED A FEW PPL ABOUT THE CO2... THEY SAID AS LONG AS MY PARAMETERS ARE ON POINT AND I HAVE GOOD LIGHTING I SHOULD BE OK JUST MAKE SURE ITS AN OPEN TOP TANK...
