Recently acquired a JBJ Commercial series titanium chiller model DA-500B 1/2 HP. What size circulation pump do i need to get? Is this chiller too big for my 75gal? the guy that i got it from used it on his 400gal. Is it going to kill my electricity bill?

thanks

wow that's a little big for a 75. i spoke to many dealers and they said 1/4 hp was plenty. if i remember correctly, if it was undersized, it would run all the time. a little oversized may start and stop more frequently. but way oversized and the thing will keep cycle on and off cause the compressor would chill the water too quickly and shut off especially if you have the intake and out put in the sump(much less volume than the tank). the water inside the core itself would just cool too quickly and the internal thermostat would shut it down before the flow can evenly distribute to the entire system. kinda like central air/ or a huge a/c in a small room. if you arre familiar with that concept. i hope i explained that correctly.
i have a 1/3 hp for my old 75 (100 total volume) and that was oversized on purpose because the tank was in the hottest room of the house. it's running a 270+ gal. right now and it seems to cycle on and off less than when it was on the 75.
that said, perhaps you can compensate by select a high flow pump to quickly distribute the cool water and create as much distance between the intake and out put as much as possile, ie. intake from the sump and out put to the tank.

that's how i understood it. i could be wrong but the theory kinda make sense though.

here's a link to some info. on flow , etc.

seeing that the chiller is too big for my tank and will most likely kill my electricity bill i decided to sell it or trade it for 1/4hp chiller(future upgrade to 120gal)
anyone interested go to the FS/FT page

The 1/10th will work but you must adjust the temp for a much lower temp to get cooler temp like to get 78,you need to set it to 75.Play around with it.The 1/4 needs to be throttled down a bit.
