They are not the only site that not refunding sposors when problem arises as far as I know. I always say it's a fishy business.

Usually there is something in the agreement, which a vendor or sponsor would sign, saying that if something happens or the vendor decides to pull out that they wouldn't get a refund of their fee. It's quite common and I would think any vendor or sponsor should know about it before they sign an agreement.

From the post above that seems that is the case with RC, as it was in the agreement.

Now when a business goes out completely, that's another whole can of worms.

Sorry for the interruption. We'll be back in a little while, I need to check something.

To the folks spreading rumors and making up quotes, it's pretty sad when you have to resort to lying to try and get members.

The truth is that during an upgrade to mySQL we encountered an error that needed to be corrected. Unlike most sites, our database is very large and routine checks can take quite a long time to run. That's one of the reasons why we're one of the few sites that runs a full nightly backup. We'll be back this morning with virtually zero data loss. Sorry to disappoint the folks forging the emails.

Slander and libel are pretty serious things.

I think they really had a problem and someone (finally) figured out how to fix it... The comment "with almost zero data loss" leads me to believe this...

I am glad they got it sorted out. I would hate to lose that resource.

Naw it wasn't us! Look at reef blogs like glassbox-design.com and reefbuilders.com Where does their info come from? maybe they are making it up. I read those blogs all the time but now i'm thinking about i shouldn't. (i never do work at work)

Do you guys really think that RC admins would admit to a hacker getting into the "important" files...and also not being able to refund their vendors?

I didn't think so.

Well this still lends credence to the fact that they need to have better IT practices. They should have tested out that mySQL patch in a similar environment before putting it in the live server.

If there is funding, more secure and reliable systems should be running-what about mirror sites. I remember at period when download BBS is at it's prime, a mirror is up immediately when the main is banned/downed or whatever. I bet a DL BBS site must have much less funding than RC.

Agreed with Marrone in the part about vendor/member should know about the agreement before entering the pact. However, it's good business to provide warranty even in hosting, BBS and internet business. People ask for live stock warranty(that's unpredictable lives we are talking about), why not intellectual goods? Sometimes, there are laws controlling conduct of business like renting a house and charging heat is llegal no matter what one signed with the tenant and in fact there are laws about intellectual goods too.
