Reef people don't use canister filters, thats why its been under the radar. FOWLR people usually go wet/dry. The only place your gonna see alot on it is going to be a freshwater forum.

I never understood why people say that cannister filters are "nitrate factories"... If you keep up with the maintenance, like you would with any other filtration system, there are NO issues. It's really not that difficult.
In terms of versatility, I'm not sure what you mean Breezp. Many cannister filters allow you to add a variety of media to them, etc.. I know quite a few people who use/used them including Steve (the old owner of Wonderful World of Fish) who had them in his personal tank with much success. All I'm saying is don't knock them 'til you've tried them.
