I'm deciding between buying an overflow box or just drilling my 50 gallon tank. I need it drilled because I built a sump for it. Is it easy to drill a tank yourself?
What materials would I need? Or is it just better to buy an overflow box?

Also, how would I know how much gph is flowing out from the overflow?

Thanks:goldfish2

Drilling isn't excessively difficult. I'd definitely go drilled, it'll be cheaper initially and cheaper than the mess you'll have to deal with if the overflow box misbehaves.

The three options are:

1. get a proper drill bit to drill the size hole you want, use a drill press
2. get a TC1 tile cutting bit for a Rotozip
3. find someone that's done it before and let 'em loose on your tank

The Rotozip option is so easy even I managed it.
