I started out on a Nikon FM2, not much to say except its functions were mostly manual. Great learning tool... It uses F-mount lenses, so any of your Nikkor lenses today will work; although AF/AFS/AFD will be manual focus. You can probably easily find FM2n for about $120-$150 shipped on Ebay, and score a 50mm f/1.8 for about $100, little more for the f/1.4. I wish I said I still have mine, but still have a N90 and F5.

the film camera are a dying breed. Even professional photographers move on to digital. If you want film camera, it's only for hobby, and you may have to develop or send the film away to get processed. Good luck in find one. I personally stared with the canon rebel and the nikon XF series 20 years ago. I still have them in my closet. :)

Planning on setting up a darkroom and developing/enlarging your own?

You can learn a lot that way, but digital is so much easier these days. That said, it's hard to go wrong with a Nikon.

I have owned a few Canon AE-1, and A1. A1 is the way to go. Great auto settings.
I sold my bodies back around 2005-2006 for under $100 each. Some under $50. They were all in great shape. I imagine one could be had cheap if you look around.

Personally, I would recommend going a little higher in your price range and get an older DSLR Nikon. I still use (and LOVE) my Nikon D100. As new models come out, the lower megapixel models DROP in price.

DSLR is to film like rechargeable batteries are to flashlights. Gilt free fun..
