I have no experience with them, but apparently they are hit or miss. I was really trying to get on or another dwarf angel, but I've heard it will either nip at corals/clams or it won't. It also might start out not nipping and then one day down the road it might start to.

The chances that it will pick on or eat some corals or clams are great. It mayn't happen right away, or sometime not even in a year, but it will happen. The question is when it does can you live with it or not and will you be able to get the Angel out if you have to. Take those things into consideration before putting one in your tank.

Your not going to get a wrong answer here...they are reef safe. They will eat corals. They will do fine with angel formula with sponge in the diet. They will nip at corals. This could go on and on and its all true. When you buy a flame your going to be taking a chance. They are neither reef safe or coral nippers. We can't answer that because every flame is going to act different. All we can give you are personal experiences. I'll give you mine. ive had a flame for maybe two years now. He is a great fish. I love him. My personal viewing of him ever eating or nipping at corals was never...but he does. My clams constantly have chunks missing out of it and my zoos slowly disappear every now and then. My girlfriend said one night she watched him eat one whole polyp with 10 minutes or so. Started nipping at it...then started yanking it and ate all the peices that broke off. So thats my side. Like I said I love the fish. He brings a lot of color and personality to the tank. So its your choice. You want to take a chance go buy one. You want to play it safe and try a different pygmy angel then there you go. But good luck with it. Hope you enjoy your decision.

In my experience, I have never had a flame or any other dwarf angel bite a coral or a clam. That said, I have no angels at the moment, but I do have 2 very healthy crocea clams. When I have had opportunities to pick up nice dwarf angels, I have passed on them. I just don't want to take the risk for my clams.

Reef safe fish

I've a Flame and a Rusty Angel in my mixed 150g Softy/LPS/SPS tank for about two years. Never had a problem with the angels except that I have seen the Rusty pick on corals however it always was as if the coral was in his way. However, I've had issues with my Powder Blue Tang which started to pick on my Green Nepthea when I moved the Nepthea near an entrance to a cave. After I moved it to few other places it stopped picking on it. I guess the concept that a particular fish is reef safe may not always hold true except in cases where the habits and/or anatomy of fish would prevent them from picking on corals.

I thought you weren't allowed to keep two dwarf angels together. Am I wrong?
that's another issue with luck being involved. i've had a flame, a keyhole and a lemonpeel hybrid in a 200 gal. for about a year without any fight breaking out. but the keyhole and lemonpeel developed a taste for acans and other fleshy brain corals....so they were given away. kept the flame for another 3-4 years without coral eating issue. but he does nip at the clam every now and then.

I have had one. It ate all sponges in the tank, then ate all the zoas it could find, but never went after my clams.
I have heard they are hit or miss, but have never seen one act well in a true reef...I have heard 10, maybe 50 , times more horror stories than good stories.

You never know. Some will some won't it depends on the fish. I have a meat eating and Acan eating bi-color blenny, who would have thunk it. Meat maybe but coral as well. Rare.

It all depends on the fish. That is the wonderful thing about this hobby, but it is also what has grown my tank collection due to having a fish I love, but having to get new tank so I can keep them. No matter what anyone says, 5 flames will all behave differently and corals that are safe with one will not be with the other 4 etc..... I also really like angels, only have one blue face right now because my mean flame hawk killed my flame. :( The Hawk does not go after my shrimp though.... believe it or not... all fish are different, it is hard to say this species is this way or that.... when you buy one, you learn what they are safe with or not.

Yes, you are...there is NO actual law against having 2 or more dwarfs together! ...But seriously, I have kept 2-3 together, in various tanks over the past 30+ years. Of course, it depends on many factors, such as tank size, established territories, etc.
