Upgrade question

Ok i have a 75g and looking to upgrade to a 120 . My question is can i put all the water from my 75 gallon in the 120 and top the rest like a water change or do i have to go throw the cycle thing again . What do you guy link and what did you do when you upgraded to a bigger tank ..

thats exactly what i did. just put new sea water in to make up the rest of the space. i went from 180 to 300 without losing 1 thing. your bringing all the biological filtration over from your other tank so you dont have to grow new bacteria. plus your not increasing your bio load so everything stays the same, but you just have more water volume.

that would probably give you a jump start but i would still cycle. slow and steady, don't rush. it also depends on your filtration, are you bringing over sand, lr and sump from old tank?

Yes bringing all that over to new tank was think of saving the old water i do water changes with to add to the new tank

+ 1 on the answers already givin , same bio-load , filtration etc. how much more rock are you adding ? is it already cured ? there maybe some cycling time needed for the additional rock if it is being added.

Ok let me clear so thing up . Im not adding new sand or live rock . Im using all my live rock in my tank right know that about 90 to 100lbs of live rock .Dont like a thick sand bed so using all my sand in my tank . Using every equipment that i have right know nothing new. I see upgrade alot here and no one here cycle there upgrade .

There will be a cycle, very minor but there will be one. Your stirring up the sand and you might get some minor die off of sponge or bacteria on the rocks through the breakdown and install of the 120. Depending on how long the 75g was set up, i would be careful to rinse the sand before putting it in. Your going to stir around stuff in the sand that can cause a larger cycle so you want to get that stuff out before putting it into the new tank.

Everything else is treated like a large water change. And whatever bio filtration you have will be sufficient enough to keep the tank stable enough so you don't lose anything. All your fish and coral should be fine if your keeping everything wet and the temp stable.

This is what i did on my upgrade from 60g to 220g worth of water without any casualties or ill effects. I swapped out the sand for brand new sand and kept about half of my old sand after rinsing it in saltwater and doubled if not tripled the rock volume. The rock was cured beforehand for 5+ weeks.

Try to use new water thats not sitting in a bucket or garbage can for more than a few days if thats what you mean by old water that you do water changes with. It might already be producing bacteria or have trates, trites, or ammonia and Po4 if its a bucket you use alot and often.

just add everything from the 75 to the 120 and top off like a water change, you should be fine. I upgraded from a 44 to a 90 and had no problem and did just that
