all kidding aside, this is pretty serious stuff. while you guys are right that you can probably survive a shock from 110v it isn't a sure thing. also, most of the time when you get shocked you aren't exactly expecting it, so the idea of trying to keep the current from running through your body is a little weak.

yes, if every time you touched your tank you took the same precautions as when you approached a wire that might be shorting out maybe it would be a little more defensible, but we all know that nobody does that.

just do some searches on people killed by their aquarium heaters and you will see that it can be really serious...

The extention used to trip on me all the time due to power failures (PFs). In my last apartment I had GFCIs installed on both tanks - they never tripped due to PFs. No I rent, so I'm taking a chance by not installing the GFCIs and not using the surge protector either...

what if your kid/pet/friend/mother sticks their finger in the tank and gets fried...

don't get me wrong. i love my tank, but this just isn't worth it to me. if you are really scared of the gfci tripping while you are at work, you can also run a ups after the gfci so even if it does trip you have a bit of time before everything goes to hell.

i tell them all to keep their "dirty mitts" out of my tank. Then I hit them with a newspaper.

JK, I would never do that to my mother or my pet.

Seriously though, I am gonna use GCFI for my set up. Wouldn't wanna risk hurting anyone.

This is a good convo. Russ' issue makes sense too. What if it cuts the electricity and your not there to turn it back on?
Top I'm not 100% sure but I think those are all older sockets. I just realized that the ones in my kitchen and bathroom do not trip during PF's. I believe it is not when the current going to the outlet(from the wall) is disturbed but the actual appliance plugged into it has some kind of failure. As far as PF are concerned.

I ran a GFCI on my 58, after a few conversations with Russ about it. One day while changing some water my wife screamed for some reason I now forget and when I turned around the hose full of water turned with me. The siphon emptied all over a powerstrip which was running my halides, return, heater etc. As soon as I could think "Oh my god I can't believe this is how I'm going to die" I heard the click and the tank shut off. I, like a true reefer doing a water change, had way more of my body in the tank than there is ever a reason to. Maybe it would have been fine without the GFCI but I sure was glad to have it there.

Plus if hospitals used life support systems that involved tanks of salt water with 13 amps in and around them I can guarantee you that regardless of electrical code the hospital's insurance carrier would FORBID them to plug that into anything but a GFCI receptacle.

IT IS NOT THE VOLTS THAT KILL YOU. IT IS THE AMPS THAT KILL YOU.

Low volts at high amps would kill you quicker than high volts with low amps.(but yes both could kill you)
+1... Its the amps... Now take it from someone who has been zapped more than a few times 110 to me is like a cup of coffee 220 and 277 hurts big time... and you should probably go to the hospital for those higher volts... But when adding water to the whole situation its a different ball game it is truly dangerous... a gfi or gfci is a must in my book, even if you dont have the outlet you should have a power strip with gfi...
Russ does bring up a good point and because of this I run my tank with and without... to explain myself, my return pump is on a regular outlet just in case because gfi's do go bad at times... But everything else is on a gfi
