help pump problems!

hey guys im in a little bit of a spot. i was doing a water change, and when i finished, i turned the pumps on, and one of my mag 9.5 died on me. tried tinkering with it but nothing. its dead and gone. so, i have laying around a flotec sump pump, any reason y i cant use this? its got a 1200 gph flow rate...so it could hold down the fort till i order a new pump...right?

Did you open up the Mag Drive pump to see if the impeller was intact.
Mag drive pumps rarely just die, usually the impeller breaks and needs replacing.

Any idea where that sump pump has been in it's past?

yea :/ the ceramic shaft is broken but its been like that, and that wouldnt cause the pump to stop else i would have never worked. also when its plugged in with out the impeller, it makes a tinging sound of sorts cause of the magnet and the electricity.

Yes, actually it will cause the pump to stop functioning. I've never tried to turn one on without the impeller assembly inserted, so I'm not sure about what noise it would make.
I would see if you can try a new impeller in it first before I totally replaced it.

I will defer to anyone who knows about sump pumps as to whether that would be acceptable (it needs to be submersed, yes?) in your tank. My concern would be how clean it is inside, if it was ever used for it's true purpose

Without the shaft, it'll probably start wobbling and destroy both the impeller as well as the pump itself likely. The shaft is there to keep everything in alignment and not grinding. It probably grinded away to the point where it seized.

As for the sump pump, I would probably bet the screws aren't designed for saltwater and may rust in your tank. If you ever used it as a sump pump, its probably filled with all kinds of nasties. I would be hesistant to use it.

Thanks! but it started up so im saved! lol i need to buy new impellers tho, there in not so pristine shape, at for the sumpump i bought it to use for filling my tank when i first started, so its safe. ur right ming the screw will rust. but no worries now!
