my mangrove island

just got 15 new red mangroves but they are only 5 inch high and my sump level is 14 inches of water so i came up with this idea do you think it will work?:tub:

I think the top of the mangroves must be above water. As long as the roots are coming out the bottom they should grow and reach down and the tops will grow up and grow leaves.

thats exactly like hydroponics except your not harvesting the plant that your growing but ya that will work perfectly!

They are in the right amount of water, setup looks like a great idea.

May I suggest that you place a 2nd plastic holder under the styrofoam pads? That should really hold them in place.

they suck up nutrients just like macro algae.

they take quite a long time to grow....at least for me. but once they sprout new leaves, it gets a little faster. the roots grows much faster than the leaves.

I was given two of them at Macna in NJ. I took a large piece of styrofoam and poked two holes big enough for them to fit. now they have a floating island. if you can obtain a nice size styrofoam you can get rid of the acrylic. just put the bottom inch or so so that its in the water and the mangrove will do fine. Mine are in the water 3 inches, and they already have leaves. don't forget a small light source.

Do they require the same lighting as over a refugium - I am using 65w x2 6700k pc for my 29 gall fuge.
It looks like the styrofoam could be kept in place w/ some eggcrate cut to fit the styrofoam squares.

Love the creativity! I don't see these often in the LFS. I have seen them on Liveaquaria a few times. Maybe you could weight them down with a filter bag of live sand or live rock rubble.

based on the rate of growth that i see with mine, it would take years to grow them to about a foot from seedlings!!!
i know nothing good comes fast in reefing but this might be an exception.....lol.
