Did my first water change. I shocked myself as well and it put me on my a__

I added pulsing xenias and 2 chromis and cuc. Xenias are getting big, chromis and cuc are doing excellent. Its been 3 days since I added livestock and so far so good. I get very nervous about losing things. I took my time with the setup as I am very impatient. Hopefully taking my time will pay off in the long run.

why do a water change? the purpose of the cycle is to get appropriate bacteria colonies in place, and other things. if you do a water change this early you get rid of such bacteria.

A water change at 6 weeks should not really affect anything except to provide the tank with the appropriate minor elements and minerals that cycling might have removed.
The majority of bacteria is not in the water column, but on the surfaces of the rock, sand, tank and all else contained in the tank.

I would also assume that the cycle itself is complete at 6 weeks - is this correct Gochiguy?

Which elements and minerals get used when cycling, if nothing is in the tank?

The cycle was complete Kathy. It was very rough waiting that long LOL. I want to make things right, thats why I waited.

Good, I thought'd I'd read on another thread about your plan and your progress. Yes, the waiting isn't easy, but so well worth it. Go you! :)

I'm sorry I should have been more detailed in my response... I made the assumption that he was already running a skimmer on the tank since he was adding a cuc, a couple of corals and fish, and skimming water takes organic and inorganic compounds out of the water.

taking the time and being patient definitely does pay off in the long run

you want to get it done right the first time, but if something ever does go wrong do not get discouraged. there are tons of things you can learn about the hobby each day with your tank, each day moving you closer to a more stable system
