What Makes SPS Happy

I just got a white with light blue tips sps How did I know when I have it in the correct spot. Is color the only factor? It is white with light blue tips it opens up to eat. it seems happy. Do I move it and hope for better color? do I leave it because it is eating is eating a good sign of health And position? I like where it is in the tank but would like if it colored up more.

Is white a normal color ?

Hi my limited experince with sps is they don't like being touched or moved around if it's opening up I would leave it. I would even putty or glue it into place so it can't be knocked over

SORRY TO CORRECT YOU THIS CORAL IS NOT BLEACHED OR DEAD! TAKE A LOOK ON LINE THERE IS WHITE SPS WITH COLORED TIPS! I MAY BE NEW TO SPS THATS WHY THE QUESTIONS BUT I HAVE A established tank

My tank has been up for over 5 years and I am slowly putting SPS in it, and when I put a peace in I want it to do its best!

Can you post a pic of it?

SPS like good water quality, strong lighting, and the right alk/cal/mg levels.

Post your parameters please as well.

Start it off low in the tank and slowly move it up over time. Most happy sps show extended popular and white tips for growth.

White is a good thing and a bad thing for the good thing if only the tips and a small part from the tips is white then it is growing and that is a good thing. if the whole thing is white and there is not polyp extention at all not even at night then its dying.. Now the way I tell when my sps are happy is by polyp extention and encrusting to the rock its mounted on. For my experience with sps is if you move them then they need about 1 to 2 months of time to be left alone they go into like a sleep state. So I would just leave it alone and keep an eye on it, if it is dying then the white will move in fast, if there is no white taking over the coral then let it be and see, if your happy with the placement hopefully the sps is too. mcnuggget come on give him a chance he is just starting the SPS game we all learned and had sps bleach on us. He is doing the smart thing and only doing them slowly some of us (ME) jumped right in with both feet and did a few at a time. I would buy 3 frags cause 1 out of the 3 wouldnt make it... But that was my record!!! We are here to help one another including the new people, cause if we cant or dont help them here then they my not have anywhere else to turn for help and then what happens? Everything dies in the tank...

There is polyp extention night and day most at night, and after I put food in I wait a few min. for polyp extention and put oyster fest in the tank. I have othere SPS with polyp extention all day long and is encrusting. I think the body of the sps is white, I have seen and had dead ones. this is not dead as far as I know I guess I will leave it in it spot if it stays alive but does not color up nice then I will move it up in the tank.
does that sound like a good plan?

Im just jumping into sps myself and was told that you need to stay on top of your water levels, testing often and dosing as needed. Good water flow and for location what I try to do is I have a diy frag rack that I made with a mag float so Ill place it there and move up slowly for about a week and then place it at the level that it seemed happy... Your welcome for the support some people forget what its like starting out and how excited you get (like a kid in a candy store with money to spend) I was there and still am everytime I walk in to a place that sells frags....LOL But I have seen a few frags which are white in color or teal pacific east had a few of them I was very tempted to buy a few but didnt cause of lack of room in the tank...lol But you have the right idea and plan just watch the water cause they do like clean water. I am working through water par problems right now myself my sps (colonys and frags) look good but could use to color up im thinking the PH has something to do with that...

There're quite a few distributors that sell frags raised in Zeovit systems. These are often effectively on the verge of bleaching, and often show substantial amounts of quite pale flesh.

It's true, though. There should always been a healthy underlying scum of brown zooxanthellae in the flesh, though this may be hidden by coloration. If you can't see that, the coral's bleached. Of course, if you got it that way, it's not your fault, so why're you spazzing out?

There is nice sps what you need to keep up is calcium and alkalinity
As you stated that polyps are open is a good sigh of water quality ! You should leave it there for now give it about 4-5 weeks then can be moved closer to top to maintain it's colors. What I do for my is using two parts alk and calcium bit of work but makes them growing good luck with it

well water has to be dead on no spikes , the coral sps acro's like the flow and some like the light more than others but all mine like the high flow with high light ..just keep the dips on new corals and qt if you can ..that will save you alot of grief and once they are set in there spot don't keep touching them they hate that ..leave them and watch them live and surely enough they will get there colors in and grow baby grow...jmho
