Is Baking Soda a "safe" way of raising pH?

Hello everyone....I've been reading online about how to raise pH and it says that adding baking soda to a system is a quick and simple way of raising the pH but does it have down sides? I have a reef tank so would it harm anything it? Thanks in advance, Fortunato

Prebaked baking soda will increase your ph significantly. It will also increase your dkh. Actually pH rising is really a side effect, most use baked baking soda for raising dkh.

I actually don't want my dKh to go up along with the pH.

I just read that washing soda (NaCO3; sodium carbonate), unlike baking soda (NaHCO3; sodium bicarbonate), will only raise pH due to the lack of a hydrogen atom.

Have you considered a CO2 scrubber?

that's not true, both will increase dKh. Sodium carbonate will increase your pH more than bicarbonate would

Hmm thanks for that link Wes, that scrubber looks very interesting. I used the washing soda, seems to have worked immediately, I don't know if that's too good though, wouldn't want them to have a pH shock now.
