This thread is great very helpful ! I agree with keeping your hands out of the tank wish I could do it lol when I got home after a week away my corals also looked great ! I wish I had 2 mp 40s right now have 4 crappy power heads in my 75 I'm hopping to get 2 used mp 40s for Christmas I think that will make a big difference! As of right now I haven't seen one thing in my tank make a huge difference I would say vodka dosing and special blend have made the most impact!

2 MP40 for a 75 G is tooooooooooooo much... One MP40 should be fine.

I would suggest those of you who are into vodka dosing at least look into vitamin c dosing a bit. Both are carbon sources but the vitamin c seems to have more positive effects and more leeway for error. I started researching vodka dosing and decided against it some time ago but then decided to try vit. c after a friend got some and was amazed with the results.
Just my .02 cents.

kalkwasser, agreed, the best thing you can do for your tank is keep your hands out of it, dont care how well you wash them scrub the ect, just leave it alone and letting it grow. which is hard to say right after a swap meet,

Of ALL the changes I've recemtly made to my 220, closed loop, denitrator, carbon & gfc reactor, more light, etc., the SINGLE most thing that, for me, made me happiest, was removing the sandbed and going bare bottom. I love it.

Barebottom is great, if you can find the beauty in it. Many people don't like the way it looks. I think a nice piece of white starboard or even just the glass looks good though.

My 33 gallon Oceanic cube was barebottom for a while, and it was the easiest time I've had keeping SPS corals, that's for sure.

The "leaving your hands out of the tank" I can agree with. I did no checking or moving around for a week because I was busy. Finally, during the weekend I came down to my tank expecting things to be out of shape. I was wrong. Everything was looking even BETTER when I didnt put my hands into the tank and missed a weekly water change

Bio-Pellets added to my system in August has made the biggest impact in decreasing my Nitrates to 0.00 and my phosphates to 0.01!

All my corals began growing and started placing a tremedous demand on Ca, alk, and Mg that the system will be using a gallon of 2 part every 7.88 days!

by far the best thing for my tank was getting an ATO when life interferes with the aquarium you dont have to worry about topping off(for a couple days in my case). more recent addition i love is a reefkeeper for temp stablity. tank wont fry because my heater gets stuck on, fan comes on when it gets to hot, lights turn off when it gets way to hot.

i know the RKL does a bunch of other things, but i currently only use it to keep my temp stable and that alone was worth the 100$. its incredible what a fan does to bring down temputure, i was looking at chillers and getting redy to drop 500$ when the only thing i needed was 105$ for a fan from wallmart and the rkl.

Great topic. Will try a few of these things.

I'm still a noobie at this, but the best change I made was adding more flow to my tank, with the help of Richie (rkaragozler)'s advice and koralia nano. Thanks man!

Domboski, that's an interesting idea. I've heard of reducing the flow at night, but not increasing the flow. I'm sure it helps with nutrient export though, right?

Side note: the Sunburst anthias I picked up at the swap is doing great! (Hiding, but that's to be expected).

I feed so much mysis to the seahorses that even the hermits and snails can't finish up the left over so the extra flow at night when the seahorses are hitched, floats out all of the extra detritus. Pretty cool actually.

You got one of the best Fatheads I've had. The first second I let it out of the bag it was doing good. Usually they hide and are timid for at least a few hours but usually a day or two. This guy was pretty bold. :lol2:

The vortechs are popular because they are in a class of their own,
Provides tons of flow but it's a gentle current that's not hard on corals. Simulates ocean currents and can literally create waves in your tank.

The closest thing they have to competition would be Tunze and they are similarly priced.

Simply put, if you want the best, you must pay for it.
