Cyano (Don't understand why need help)

You should find someone with a hanna meter/checker that can check your PO4 levels for you, the test kits really aren't that accurate.

Special Blend is a bacterial additive. I too have found it to work quite well in clearing up cyano.

Thanks, I picked it up at Petco and dosed for 120 gal (Tank=120 with 40 gal sump & 150 lbs of LR. Boy that stuff surely stinks. I'm running the RO to mix 30 Gal of the ESV salt mix.

i have used reef crystals few times in the past and every time it gave me cyano would go away instantly as soon as i did a water change with a different salt i found coralife or tropic marin to be excelent

After the first dose did you follow the maintenance dose schedule or Day 8, 15 schedule?

Thank you very much. I've been using Salifert test kits and according to them my tank is where it should be but yet there is still cyano and I have plenty of turnover in the tank. Today I begin the switchover from Reef Crystals to ESV.

Picked up special blend at a local petland and dosed for 200 gallons. there should be a warning label on the stuff. as soon as i opened it up i looked around to see if i had stepped in something.

did a vacuum of the substrate and a test of the water before dosing.

Special blend is just a bacteria additive. All its doing is adding something else to eat and reduce nutrients in your water column. This isn't a miracle elixir for your tank to fix your cyano problem. It might help, and maybe all your tank needed was to diversify the types of bacteria, but there is an underlying problem in your tank that is causing the cyano problem. There's also a grocery list of things that are linked to cyano, and if your repeatedly getting cyano even after using special blend there is another problem you should be fixing rather than to keep buying special blend.

Just my .02. Keep that in mind when dosing and trying to figure out the problem. If your using special blend as part of your regular maintenance to combat possible cyano your doing something wrong and wasting money.

The underlying problem has eluded me for the past month, as a check in water parameters doesn't indicate that there should be a problem. The one that I get asked about the most is Phosphate, and with a hanna meter it repeated tests at .01 to .02 , feeding is not a problem since I am not a heavy feeder. The only other possible cause would be water movement, I would venture to say that the spots with the most cyano are the ones with the slowest movement because of the aquascaping. In this regard I have implemented a solution and added the special blend also as an added help.

I provide diligent husbandry and have done just about everything under the sun except changing my salt which I'm in the process of doing now from Reef Crystals to ESV and am also using the special blend hoping it can keep it at bay until I can get a few water changes in. I'm doing 30 gallons at a clip, 30 today, 30 on Saturday then 30 next Friday.
