Most people love them. I personally will never go without one. I use to run 4 inch, but got tired of cleaning every other day. Now I run 7 inch filter sock and love it. They last about 4-6 days each. I love it. Will never go without one...

It's not that much of a pain with a 7 inch filter sock. and depending on size of tank, if you run 2 or more, they will last longer. It's not that difficult to take old dirty filter socks and either bleach them in a bucket or simply throw them into a washer...

I use to run my sump with no sock.. But added it and it seem to be a lot better and u will not let all the garbage into ur skimmer... So I will think it will put less strain on ur equipment .. So it will last u longer... It's as simple as getting a few socks and changing it every few days. And when u have a few dirty just throw them in to the wash.

I'd guess that the folks who like them the least don't have a bunch of them to switch in/out of the sump.
Cleaning them isn't a problem in a washer, but if you only have a couple you usually end up washing them by hand.

They are a great addition to a tank as they do a terrific job of instantly removing large - and small - bits of detritus from the tank. You just need to stay on top of cleaning them.

Do make sure they are not placed near the edge of your sump, if you don't clean them often enough they will clog up and if near the edge of the sump - they can 'wick' water out of your sump.

Socks to me form a function of mechanical filtration. Without them where is all the detritus going to land up ? You have to export it somehow. I have 8 backup socks and rotate them out. It takes all of 30 seconds to switch out and does wonders for your tank. Once every 6-7 weeks I clean them all. Drop off at the laundromat wash in hot water with a cup of bleach and than 2 additional water only wash cycles and im done It really is not that hard at all. Furthermore tell me how much clearer your tank is with a 200 micron sock as opposed to no sock....:wink1:

So you wash it with bleach, and then wash it multiple times after? Doesnt sound right... sounds like the biggest PITA ever.

how is it a pain? do you not do laundry? its the same thing pretty much imo.... and if you have a few filter socks, you do a filter sock load. thats all. before you put new ones into your system, just rinse them once before you put them in. easy as pie. one of the least amount of work and/or husbandry you have to do. testing your water or sometimes feeding depending on what you feed can be more of a hassle then cleaning a filter sock...

and like i said, a 7 inch filter sock lasts even longer and you do not have to clean as often. thats why i have 5 - 7inch filter socks. i do a cleaning once every month...

he washes it extra to fully make sure there is no bleach left over. if someone only wanted to rinse it once and take the chance, well then they can go for it. he is just being careful. thats not a pain. i personally bleach them, and then do only one long hand rinse out instead of multiple. although before i use, i rinse it again. not to get bleach out again and be safe, but because when its already wet, it adds weight to it, and when i put into filter sock holder, it sinks once it hits water. when its dry, i have to sit there and hold it under water to make it stretch out completely in place. other wise the bottom floats up or does not sit in place correctly until its in long enough

I think we all agree filter socks are a good idea!! I would like to add on my system I put PVC pipe about a six inch piece added on to the two returns. This helps push the debris down into the socks so they don't overflow as quick. It also keeps the waterflow sound down a little.

That's all relative. It'll still be a drag IMO if I had a Hefty Bag-sized filter bag that requires service once every 2 months.

I have a raised detritus trap with a drain valve.
