So I wake up this morning, to service my tanks. Ans what do I find? A cotton type growth inside my aquarium. Can someone tell me what this is? and is this harmful for my tank?

i don't think they can grow that big that it can over power the zoa...even if they do, u can pluck them easily when it populates

The sponge grows over my zoas

Sent from my DROID RAZR using Reefs

Actually, Mazon is correct.
There is at least one type of sponge that will grow over anything and will smother it to death by blocking the light.
We don't see these often, but it can happen. The great majority of sponges tend to grow out of the light and one the underside of the rocks..those are harmless and a mild help to the tank (sincre sponges are filter feeders).

What we can't tell - due to the quality of the pic - is what sponge the OP is dealing with (nor can I tell you by looking at it if the sponge is of the sort that overgrows corals..only time will tell that). The blob in the pic looks a little large for a pinapple sponge though...
