I used to have two sea hares (the big ugly brown kind) that mowed down my hair algae. They disappeared probably more than a year ago after running out of food.
A couple of weeks ago a new slug appeared in my tank, but I haven't added a single specimen or rock in about half a year or more. This one is presently about 2 inches in length and a little less than 1 inch in breadth. It has white flesh against the glass as I watch it make its rounds, and that white flesh is completely surrounded by a deep dark blue (almost black) flesh covering.
It's much more elegant looking than the sea hares I lost a while back. It does appear to have the "ears/antennae" that my long-lost friends had, but it's smaller, sleeker, and not at all ugly (though it is indeed wierd). I don't have any hair algae (what a shame) for it to mow down, so it seems to center its activity on the glass.
Is it at all possible that this is a new generation, arising after some long dormant state?
Two nights ago, we spotted a smaller slug, completely white, without the surrounding dark flesh. It was on the glass adjacent to its bigger "brother." Then we lost track of it.
If people need pix, I can do that (should have done it to include with this post, but couldn't hold myself back from asking the question).
