coral id?

what kind of coral is this? its soft, but not like anemone soft. when it closes or lights are off it retracts back into a shell like a hammer coral or frogspawn completely. the larger one is around 3 1/2 inches. there are 3 now. what are they? and yes i know all the way to the side is apastasia.

I know where one is for sale, it looks identical to that and goes for about 100. I forget the name but it has been there for a few months now. I was thinking of getting it for the new tank. I will look at the name next time.

Something very similar to what you have appeared in my tank too. I think it must be a plate fungia. Weird to appear out of nothing! Pretty cool I must admit, much rather find these little gems rather than aptasia

I have those too! Mine is on a branch, I thought it was some kind of blastos at first.

I think it's a type of fungia called Cycloseris cyclolites...http://wetwebmedia.com/fungiidae.htm

According to http://www.coralhub.info/cf/a-z/cycloseris/, as a juvenille, it is attached to something and becomes free-living as it ages.

it looks to be a fungia, they sprout babies pretty easy and thats what they look like

It could be. My colors are purple with alternating grayish green with green tentacles. Looks really nice in the lights. Looks as if yours has already formed a hard skeleton.

I'd vote for plate coral funghia too. Thing is, they are known to sprout babies from their dead skeleton (or pieces of it) many months after they die.

Just googled it. Polyp bailout is the technical term but what I'd really like to know is how the time mechanism works since funghias are known to exhibit this phenomenon in 3-4 months.

I think you are right with the plate, but the problem i see is I did not think they split into heads like that. It started with one. Within a month there was 3-4. And it mainly opens with just leds

Definitely a group of plate corals. As they get bigger they'll eventually drop of the rock.
