i just set up a nano reef using live sand and rock from an existing tank i have, and when examining the sand, i noticed almost microscopic organisms. they look like tiny worms, red/orange in color, and about 4-5 mm in length. any idea of what they could be? harmful or dangerous? and i tried taking a pic but they are too small for anything to be seen clearly in the pictures. thank you

Did it look like this..only smaller?
BristleWorm.jpg

Was it worm shaped or more oval, and how thin was it..like a hair or wider, if so, please compare it to something?

Unless it is a flatworm, good chance they are ok in your tank, but let's try and get an ID for you. Any further info you can provide will be helpful :)

hard to tell if those are on the glass or sand but if they're on the sand they look like what Kathy had up (bristle worms). They are fairly benign. They surprised me when I first started but if you don't feed in excess or near night time they tend to decrease in numbers.

yea they are on the sand, and they are too small for me to tell if they are bristle worms or not just by comparing them to pictures i have found online. but hopefully thats what they are, thank you for the help!

I'm tossed on this...I don't like the fact that they look like they are curled up (not normal looking that tightly cured). Usually they stay closer to the rock and not quite so far out in the open.

Is this a new tank..any ammonia reading? Other parameters?
