Growth areas for next 5 years.

I'm throwing this out for the sake of introducing something new to the forum.

Where do you think we will see growth ($$$ wise) in over the next 5 years? Do you think it will come from hardware? Do you think it will come from live stock? ETC

Give me your thoughts.

I think the whole plankton raised deal is going to make some waves (not neccessarily good). A wholsaler in Atlanta called them "magic fish".

I hope it will come from aquaculture. Love that tank-raised livestock.

This is probably overly optimistic, though, given the challenges facing anyone who intends to try and make money raising livestock.

For some of those being raised it's magic that they live. I agree I see lots of growth in the aquaculture of fish area. I don't see a whole lot in the coral realm because I believe it's pretty much at it's limit now. With all the advances they are creating with angelfish at the Waikiki it can only be time before lots of fish are bred and or plankton raised

Hey Kalkbreath, hate to admit it but Marc Weiss Reef DNA is actually pretty damn good, been dosing it for a few weeks now and i can actually SEE improvements. No joke!!!!!

And before you ask he is not my uncle, or brother or related in any way. And yes i do think Black Powder and Spectra Vital Suck.

While i will agree w/ you in principle, if i recall correctly, the Waikki aquarium was succesful at raising these angels becuz the aquarium was successful at catching/raising the frys intial foods.
This was similar to the work done in the 70's by Moe and Young, where they actually raised french angels fry by collecting copepod plankton. They were successful at raising thousands of fish, however the cost of collecting the intial food proved to be disasterous.
Obviously this is not a cost effective way.

So for me the largest areas of research (and hopefully growth potential) HAS TO BE in designing/creating fry foods. These foods have to stimulate the fry to eat, are nutritionally balanced, and be cost effective.
So unless this kind of stuff happens the captive fish market will be stagnent

Have you ever tasted any liquid Marc Weiss products? Have you ever smelled any liquid Marc Weiss products? I HAVE !! How odd that they taste and smell like APPLE JUICE. I believe he is using apple juice as a base. The sugar in the apple juice causes the corals to expand like mad just like giving a kid a bunch of sugar, both go nuts. But sugar does not exist in saltwater. So is this healthy?? Just asking. What do you think?

I shal refer to him as the man in the bathing trunks and inflatable swimming ring. actually i have heard GOOD things about his products.....If he has dicovered that apple juice is great for corals, then he should reap the rewards for his discovery.

Overall as a whole? The money will be in the whole package. Some dry goods are always necessary, I think we may see greater profits in the animals as more and more are captive raised/reared and mortality rates drop.

The trend in the hobby has been towards less equipment but higher quality equipment. The cutting edge retailers know this and have figured out that they can do just as well selling one high quality skimmer and some liverock instead of hundreds of dollars worth of useless crap. Unfortunately there are still the uninformed masses out there, however I was quite heartened this year at the Spring Pet Industry Trade Show in Atlantic City where normally we are beating the vendors hawking crap off with a stick but this year it wasn't so bad and there was much more emphasis on "natural" systems for saltwater.

There is a very interesting thing happening in the drygoods end of the business as a whole. Because of internet and mail-order pricing and also pressure on the mom & pop pet store from the Superstores, there is more and more direct selling and bypassing the distributor. The numbers of distributors are dropping while the Independant stores have actually stabilized. Independant stores are getting into buying co-ops with their competitors and approaching the manufacturers directly. This can be a hassle because when you buy direct you end up having to order from 10-50 different vendors at once. Where you maybe had to deal with 2 maybe 3 orders a week, you may find yourself juggling up to 10 (and when they all show up the same day you have a real joy checking them in and putting them away!).

My 2 cents worth.....:

Top 5 areas of growth:

• Aqua-Culture Fish
  Aqua-Culture Corals
  Trading Clubs/CO-Ops
  High End Systems Gear $400+
  Middle range Systems Gear $200-400

Continued pressure to preserve existing reefs and their harvests should also continue to grow as will pressure to limit harvests. The industry will also most likely see pressure to better self regulate- whether anything comes of it remains to be seen.

Also the trend to go to high end gear is actually disturbing and reminds me of the stereo gear boom of the late 80's early 90's. I hope these manufacturers continue to make better middle gear thats affordable and durable over pushing expensive and some what exotic gear for the average reefer.

I would hope also that more european vendors import their wares or at least expand their presence over here and at better price points than that which exist to date.

Or i could just be a fish meal smoken whore....
