Hi Gang,

It's amazing what you can actually learn by talking to a "real person" isn't it? Naesco called MAC and now he has a much better grasp of what's going on.

I urge you all to ask MAC about whatever is on your mind. They are located in Hawaii, which is a state of the US.

What that means is that if you have a "no long distance plan" on your cell phone, you can call them for the same price as calling your neighbor. Just remember that they are 6 hrs behind East Coast time.

I talked to Paul a couple of times - it sure is better than getting 2nd and 3rd hand information from people that you don't know WHAT their agenda is.

Cheers
James

I agree! But remember, anyone can feed you a line of "we're working on it". I would urge you to ask MAC how they can possibly certify any batches of animals out of the Philippines when there is no cyanide test currently in place. And then if they say that a test is on the "priority" list, ask them why certification without the test was a priority until all of the uproar about it. :) And if it's such a priority and so important, will they stop the certification of animals and issuance of pretty stickers until it's in place. If not, then what is THEIR agenda??

Hi Mary,

What do you mean by certify? MAC has a few different types of certifications.

Perhaps you too are confused - it's very confusing. That's why I urge you to call them if you have questions or just want to talk.

Cheers

I read your response (your last post in this thread) about an hour ago. I couldn't respond then because I had to go pack an order. You had stated, as did Lee Morley in a previous thread, that MAC doesn't specify cyanide. Glad to see you removed that! You must have read my response to Lee...

What do I mean by certified? Exactly what I said.
certification of animals
James, I have spent HOURS helping MAC with those standards in the beginning. I have had public meetings with them, private meetings with them, had them out to my facility a couple of times, served on their Board of Directors, gave pro-MAC presentations to hobbyists (one on #reefs). I have gone from gung-ho MAC all the way rah-rah-rah to skeptical to vocally expressing my skepticism. I fully understand MAC. And that's why I am so appalled.

As far as I'm concerned the fact that an exporter, importer, or retail store can be MAC certified while not actually carrying any MAC certified fish is missleading to say the least. The hobbiest is going to see this sticker and think the store is on the up and up, when in fact they are most likely carrying cyanide caught fish. How can you be a certified exporter/importer/retailer without a certified product?

Mary,

My post wasn't specifically aimed at you - it's for the rest of the people that are "mudslinging" without the facts. If you want the facts, it's pretty easy to just call MAC and talk to them. At least hear their "side of the story." If you don't believe them, well that's your prerogative - but at least you tried.

Cheers

"Mud slinging without the facts"is not much dif then MAC slinging without the facts! What has MAC certified at all? What makes their fish anymore sustainable? Are they banning collection of any fish ,due to low supply? Are they reducing collection numbers on any fish? What prof do they offer that there was a sustainability problem to begin with?

james:

no, i don't have long distance, so i'll post a simple question here

(especially since it does bother me that you seem to misunderstand my points about why i feel the way i do about mac)

dear mac:

would your organization be willing to put a disclaimer on your certification labels given to stores, and on all public literature, whether website, or handed to hobbyists, that mac certification does not imply a cyanide free fish, and that the certification is being given w/out such testing in place, along with a detailed explanation of what cyanide is, and does?

i simply want to avoid any innocent hobbyist purchasing a fish thinking that certification implies cyanide free

It would take a pretty big sticker to get that entire disclaimer on there, Vitz.

Peace,

well hardy har har!

i'll settle for:

'mac certification does not imply a cyanide free fish, and the certification is being given w/out such testing in place

that leave you with a small enough sticker?

mac can always get a small grant to pay for the extra paper and printing too :P
