Steve,

I am in favor. Following my credentials:

1) President of Ocean Voice International, Canadian NGO with years of experience working on different issues related to the trade of marine ornamentals. I was speaker during MACNA X in Los Angeles. I have been speaker in different events organized by marine aquarium clubs in Toronto, Québec, Ottawa, Hawaii. Also gave a talk about OVI's work in the Philippines during the previous MACNA hold in Louisville

2) Professional aquarium consultant in Canada. I have set up 3 major retail stores in the Ottawa region. Also organized workshops to train staff and owners of aquarium stores about water quality (salt and fresh) and husbandry practices. Erradication of disease also included

3) Marine aquarium consultant since 1989. I had worked setting up coral reef displays for the Museum of Nature in Ottawa, which have been the central attraction during exposition about coral reefs and their biodiversity Also, I have organized and conducted several workshops oriented to schools in the Ottawa region during winter breaks. I contributed with Don McAllister as consultant for the Philippines display at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. I got back yesterday from Cancun where we have a project oriented to the conservation of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System in the state of Quintana Roo. One of the components of this project includes work with the interactive aquarium in Cancún.

4) Owner of Récifs, a company that set up marine and freshwater aquariums. As such I have contratcs with the Casino du Lac Leamy in Gatineau, a 500 gallons reef system has been under my responsibility during the last three years. Mortality = 0 Other major contracts included the City of Ottawa and many commercial businesses.

5) I consider myself very lucky. I have a good knowledge and direct experience with each one of the levels of the trade of marine ornamentals
I have been importer, retailer, hobbyist, biologist anf conservationist.

6) Participant to some of the workshops organized by MAC.

As you can see is not only my experience working as an NGO but also the knowledge I have about this commercial activity that tells me that I could contribute in a positive way to the idea I am suggesting.

Regards

Jaime

The issue of reform in our hobby must be front and centre before every hobbyist and industry convention or meeting.
Just my opinion, but not much will be accomplished in the 'other room'.

Hobbyists need to know what cyanide is doing to our reefs and what they can do about it.
Industry needs to know that times they are a changing and they better be a part of it.

More than that, it needs to be something more than a feel good session.

It actually has to make a difference in the lives of the collectors.

Otherwise, this is a completely useless exercise, signifying nothing.

The problems facing the hobby hadn't and have not be the front neither the centre before each one of the stakeholders of this industry. A good example of this is that MACNA organizers do not include these important issues in their agenda. The reason is simple is not good advertising for the industry. Many people do prefer to keep their heads in the sand and ignore the reality.

The idea of having this "parallel workshop" could be benefitial for everyone in the industry. This kind of "parallel activity" does take place during important events any where in the world. There are some ignoring the problems.. there are some that could be there to make sure that the problems are not ignored any longer.

Mike... are you in or out?

AHH NAESCO,
The reform politics of the past years ACTUALLY AND MOSTLY took place in private, at dinner and out side the presentation hall. The"other room" is an attempt to bring it inside more. The front and center platform, which is obviously needed, is not on tap for this particular MACNA.
Perhap it will be in the next MACNA or IMAC.
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE IN FRONT OF US AND WE NEED TO WORK OUT MANY THINGS TOGETHER.

My shop is named after one of those 3. I shopped there 15 years ago!

The display at the Casino must have gone up after I moved away :(

Sounds like I might have to haul my butt to MACNA ;)

Jaime, I'm almost positive we've met before, at Mike & Mary's... with the amount of time Scott and I spent there, I can't imagine that we didn't meet! I'm surprised Mike didn't charge us RENT! 8O

In fact, I still run the 55 modified Dutch system that Mike built for us ~1988! It's got over 1000 miles on it now!

I guess I'll have to go to MACNA, just to see if I recognize you!
