G'day

I recently came across an estimate that 70% of all ocellaris clowns sold in the US are now captive-bred [Challenge is to find it again - although think it was posted as a response to the Nemo phenomenon ...]

I'd be curious to know what other people would put the figure at. Any thoughts ?

Also, if anyone else has seen that elusive ref, I'd appreciate a pointer.

Cheers from Down Under,

I'd support that figure - just based on my own limited experience.

I order almost all captive raised clowns - only exception is the occasional substitute from a wholesaler, and I've had some bad luck with captive raised Maroon clowns lately, so I've opted to order a few wild caught ones. My own store stats would put the number higher than 70 % and I'm sure that others might have a number lower...

I also buy captive raised dottybacks and seahorses. I did have a local source for Banggai cardinals, but her pair have stopped producing...

I also trade a lot in coral fragments propped by customers.

Good question -- I don't know. I guess it depends if the breeders sell to the wholesalers that are drop shipping for the big e-tailers. The breeder I deal with does not sell to hobbyists.
