Mangrove area in Bohol Island put under ’State Of Protection’
August 16, 2003
Some 387 hectares of mangrove area in Bohol province were placed recently under the full administrative jurisdiction of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with the issuance of Presidential Proclamation No. 426 of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last July 22.
Declaring it as “Panglao Island Protected Seascape,” the presidential edict segregates the entire area from any form of development that would jeopardize the survivability of the mangrove forests found on the 8,740-hectare Panglao Island located within five barangays in the municipalities of Dauis and Panglao.
DENR Elisea G. Gozun said Presidential Proclamation No. 426 declared the entire area as protected area under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act of 1992 or Republic Act 7856. She noted that residents in the area are supportive of DENR’s initiative to protect the mangroves in their area.
Under Republic Act 7586, a protected seascape is defined as “areas of national significance characterized by the harmonious interaction of man and land while providing opportunities for public enjoyment through recreation and tourism within the normal lifestyle and economic activity of these areas.”
With the proclamation, DENR, through the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), will directly manage the protected area. The PAMB is tasked to draw up a blueprint for its management in coordination with concerned local government units.
