Hi all
A donation fund for nets has been started please donate to it if you can.
Because its through a for profit company no tax deductions can be claimed for your contribution. Because some may decide not contribute because there is no tax write off I'm going to give those people a option to send their donation through the Coalition of Reef Lovers (CORL) a 501-(c)-(3) not for profit organization. It looks like we will be moving our Main international office so the new mailing address for now is...

Mike King
CORL-AS / DMWR
P.O. Box 3730
Pago Pago
American Samoa 96799

There is no addresses on the island only PO boxes, and the best way to send is USPS priority mail.
I'm checking to see if I can set a second Paypal account for just Ferdie and CORL-PI and will post results later.
Please Mark any donation NET FUND and If sending via paypal the account is [email protected]
and E-Mail me a note asking that the money be applied to the Net Fund.
I'll Post a message on the CORL web site www.corl.org showing all donations and the break down of where the monies received went to cover cost associated with the project. I'm working on getting a verified account through FundAfriend also and will keep you posted.
If anyone wishes to donate straight to CORL to help fund its projects don't hesitate we need the help too. CORL - International currently has a building in the states but because of lack of funding we will have to close it down along with CORL-USA which was the center for all of the hobbyist based projects.
By the way, Ferdinand Cruz abd Steve Robinson are both part of the CORL-PI crew and will be important parts of the the Net Training program there.
The next CORL news letter will be out mid July and some parts of it will be posted here, anyone who is a CORL supporter will receive their copy via E-mail then.

Thank You
Mike King
Director of the Coalition of Reef Lovers

Mike,
Accepting tax deductable donations may be more complicated than you think. The title of your post almost makes it seem like people can deduct their contributions twice. Have you cleared everthing with an attorney?

Thanks Dizzy
I made the correction, yes any donation is tax deductable but as always the donor should check with their accountant as they are limmited to how much of their income they can donate to charity every year.

No harm in a little competition, Mary. :D

Regardless of which one people contribute to, the end result will be the same: More netting for the collectors that need it.

Regards.

Mike,

According to Mike, he isn't competing- just setting up another alternative way to contribute to the original fund.

A donation fund for nets has been started please donate to it if you can.

RC and I would just have appreciated being advised of his offer prior to it being made so we could work out the details first.

CORL-AS Update
CORL and the American Samoan Government's Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources will be giving a Presentation at the upcoming South Pacific Commissions Fisheries Managers meeting in New Caladonia in August. Fisheries managers from all over the Pacific will be attending this meeting and CORL will present its Program for Self Supporting Coastal resource management along with its work on community fisheries management.

This weekend CORL is giving a Community Based Coral Farming for Coral Reef Rehabilitation workshop in American Samoa.

The union of CORL, DMWR, Sea Grant, Land Grant, and the American Samoa community college for a Aquaculture/Mariculture education and research center has now started with all coming together to work toward this common project we should be able to secure funding to get things started yet this year.

CORL has been asked to start a branch in Western Samoa and has accepted the project. I'm having dinner next week with a land owner who wants to donate some land for the project.

CORL has several more projects ready to submit in American Samoa here is a full list of started and proposed projects

4 Communities want to start coral farms for reef restoration CORL/DMWR project (started)

1 Coral reef education project (will put reef aquariums in all of the High school science class rooms. CORL/SPEP project (proposed)

1 Preschool-education project Samoan alphabet coloring book + Video. CORL/SPEP ( started)

1 Marine lab at Leone High School (CORL/LHS) project (proposed)

2 Reef education videos (Tide Pools and a coral reef awareness video). CORL project (started)

1 Coral Reefs of American Samoa video (those flying on Hawaiian air to American Samoa air will see it). CORL/DMWR project (started)

1 Temperature induced bleaching minimization project. CORL (proposed)

1 Community based monitoring assessment. CORL (started)

10 awareness videos on Communities involved with the DMWR's Community Based fisheries management program CORL/DMWR. (started)

1 snorkeling trail 3 artificial memorial reefs (started)

1 proposed Sea Turtle sanctuary area project

And I tossed CORLs help into a few Mariculture projects too.......

It's going to be a very Busy year :)

CORL-USA Update

Close down of CORL-USA has started.

I'm looking into moving the International office here (American Samoa).

If anyone in the West Michigan Area can help move the equipment and Library into storage Dennis and Dave need help ASAP. E-Mail me your contact info and I will have them get a hold of you.

On behalf of Chicagoland Marine Aquarium Society, good luck and congratulations on a successful fund drive. CMAS-Chicago donates $100.00 to the CORL Philippine Net Fund.

John,

Mike is accepting donations through CORL to be sent to the net fund run by RC and myself. This was an alternative for people wanting a tax deduction. If CMAS wants to donate to CORL directly to help with their current needs, then by all means please do. But do not earmark funds specifically for the netting fundraiser, as that has ended and I am no longer seeking contributions. Please wait until either RC and myself start the Indo fund to contribute, or if CORL/AMDA sets up their own funds contribute to those.

Then with Mike King's approval, CMAS will apply this donation to the AMDA Fund as its first donator.

Since CMAS BOD voted to donate to CORL, we will not redirect or donation without Mike King's suggestion.

Thanks John,
Please donate it directly to AMDA's net program as a club is already a NPO there is no need to funnel it through CORL.
Also you can unsticky this post.
I will work on the next CORL news letter and give you a summery of it in a few weeks and if possable you can post it with a sticky for all.
Thanks.

Get AMDA to do a post on their fund raiser and skicky it :D

I will also help the AMDA net funding cause and CORL will give them 400.00 toward some barrier netting.

Again the offer stands If anyone dosn't want to donate directly to the AMDA net fund because lack of a full 501-c-3 tax deduction they can do it through CORL. I'm glad to say no one so far has done this and all have donated their hard earned cash to Mary's and RC's fund raiser without the need to get anything back besides the future aspect of Net Caught fish! Thanks!!!!!

Things are moving very quickly down here in American Samoa and the next news letter will be quite informative.

Afio Mai,

Lelei tele, we will direct the funds to the yet-to-be-born AMDA fund drive.

I have been begging Steve to produce a funding donation page for AMDA for weeks now. He's all hyped up now from being on TV, and I heard he's been shopping for nice clothes. Maybe the AMDA BOD will produce a funding plan tonight at their meeting.

Did you get any video of that viscious storm that American Samoa experienced?

Soifua Failauga!

Yes I did, I missed the first landslide but did record part of the 2nd and a whole lot of the flooding, FEMA is already asking for a copy :?
The final death toll was 6 all killed in the first slide, the youngest of the family that was killed was a regular visiter to the DMWR and we knew him quite well. Things are finally getting back to normal and it didn't rain at all today for the first time in a month!
