So where does one get MAC certified percs? Do they expect everyone to drive to Michigan?

I don't even think there are any MAC certified percs or blue tangs- that's funny. John, are those species coming out of the MAC certified collection areas?

There are no MAC fish available in commercial quantities. I'm more interested to know if these 2 particular species are available in any quantities.

Not in commercial quantities...

Then why state in the press release that people should look for MAC certified fish when there are hardly any available?

Jeez, that's like saying the fish are cyanide-free when you don't even have a cyanide test in pla...

...oh, I get it.

Peace,

Chip

Chip we want to encouage all reefers to buy cyanide free fish whereever possible. MAC has committed to ensuring that fish certified as such are also to be tested for compliance.
This is a good thing and over time those in the cyanide game will be outed.

And that...
Brings us to the posts over a year ago. No training...no fish.
Training comes first...then fish supply...then certification...
However...since starting backwards...so much time has past that we may eventually get to the training this year!
Organized, funded, national and in areas with real fish variety and supply.
That is exactly the primary directive of CORL and with two training teams training 35 divers at a time, the first thousand can be converted in one year.
Soon...there will be movement soon on this front.

I understand this, and would love for it to happen.

However, why state that consumers should look for MAC certified fish NOW, when interest will be increased due to "Finding Nemo"? They have nowhere near any kind of commercial saturation of the market, so consumers are going to be looking for something that hardly anyone has.

"Hey, where are the MAC-certified fish?"

"Sorry, we don't have any."

This will happen across the country, because their program doesn't have it's "legs" yet.

All I'm asking is why include it in the press release when it's not out there for potential new consumers to see? Then, however, I applied the same logic as them saying, long-ago, that MAC fish were cyanide-free when there was no cyanide test applied at any stage of their certification.

Again, I'm just trying to understand the (lack of?) logic here...

Peace,

Chip

And around and around we go. I want to get of this merry-go-round!

Certified fish...I can sell you a couple of panther groupers or mandarin gobies. Sorry about the clowns though, mine are from ORA which can't be certified.

well-you could always explain to your customers what the certification really does, and doesn't mean-that's what i do

I try my best. The other suggestion I have is to look throught the postings on this site. That's much better than me trying to explain both sides of the issue and they can make an informed decision on their own.

I didn't know MAC was capable of being succinct. :P They must have a new writer on board.

The 6 guidelines given to hobbyists at the end was done by me. MAC PR asked for 5 or 6 short important suggestions. There they are

There are no MAC Certified Blue Tangs.... yet.

Amphiprion ocellaris(False Percula clown) is possible from Batasan Island and Tangaran but I think they are uncommon there. The species of clownfish readily found at the MAC Certified Collecting areas are maroon, pink skunk, tomato, and Clark's clowns.

Several of you have mentioned why would MAC encourage people who watched Finding Nemo to ask for MAC certified fish when there aren't any available. I have a simple and cynical answer, to encourage all of the stores that field these requests to consider becoming MAC certified. If you flood all the stores with patrons (with money in hand) you will have a lot of stores inquiring about MAC and MAC certified fish. You can also see an article about MAC and Finding Nemo teaming up to encourage responsible fish collecting here http://boston.com/dailynews/149/ascribe ... Nem:.shtml

Steven,
I don't disagree with your assessment of the MAC strategy. IMO is won't work though. About all Nemo can hope to do is create a demand for tank raised clownfish, which many of us already have. The only way MAC will ever be able to get stores interested in their certification program is to have lots of good high quality fish available for the stores that seek to join them. Trying to create a demand for something you cannot deliver is foolhardy. I understand that MAC is faced with a "can't get the job without the experience, can't get the experience without the job" type situation. MAC my advice would be to forget the side shows and get back on the field issues. The stress of the long hours of running a local fish store is already overwhelming, please don't try duress again.
