There was some mention in regards to one particular new exporter that their first shipments were excellent and had very low DOA/DAA numbers. Later shipments I believe were said to be improperly packed and resulted in high mortalities.

Is there any way that importers can band together to force exporters to adhere to some sort of standard set of best handling practices? Something to the effect of "if exporters pack and handle the fish corectly, the importer eats the DOAs; if the standards are not followed the exporter eats the DOAs"?

It only seems fair to me.

Opposite Lee, they started out rocky, now they've impoved. We as importers always try to have the pack done according to what we'd like, sometimes though, people are a creature of habit. Most the time, the packers mean well.

As far as eating the doa, the cost of the fish is not much, its the freight that kills it. Banding together for group buuing power seems interesting, I wonder what they're eaction would be (exporters)?.

When something goes seriously wrong, the exporter usually knows what happened. I have made it very clear that I will no longer pay for animals OR frieght that are lost due to obvious exporter error. That said, when dealing with live animals you are going to incur losses. It's inevitable. The goal is to keep those losses to a strict minimum.

I follow the simple rule...if too much dies, I don't buy from that exporter. I try to keep it simple.
