Tune in to MSNBC right now: 8 Eastern. Keith Oberman is doing a segment on Finding Nemo and Steve Robinson is supposed to be a guest.

Hrm...he just basically said the same thing over and over, to every question, about net-training and AMDNA needing more support in Indonesia and Philippines. However, when asked about what exactly cyanide fishing *is*, he went on about net training again.

Of course, he didn't have much airtime. That would've been better if they dedicated an hour or half-hour to it, but I'm not certain America cares that much...

It was good to attacha face to the name, though, and kudos to him for getting on national television to preach an important message.

Peace,

Chip

Chip,
I thought Steve did real good considering the short notice they gave him. At least millions of people have now heard about the use of cyanide.

Jeez... He told me NBC, not MSNBC...
As long as he kept things upbeat and positive.

Rats, no cable. I would have really liked to have seen Steve's interview. I guess we have to call him "Show Time Steve" or Mr. Robinson now.

Way to go, Steve!

I didn't know he had short notice.

That last question he should have answered was how the fish are caught with cyanide...that's the only point I'm making.

Othwise, I commend him for doing a great job. He got the word out that something's rotten in Denmark, regardless.

Peace,

Chip

Two hours notice... Sent the wife out to get the dry cleaning so he'd have something presentable. Or so I heard. LOL.

Mike,
I just wish he would have worn the Yankee's cap like I advised him. The glare coming off his head was blinding.

Hey,
I just got home. They told me it will play again like every three hours so do your homework and catch it.
We got 3 minutes only and my intention was to get to Disney responsibility and ask them to help. Oberman asked that question point blank and I asked for Disneys help. Now, I hope the phone rings.
AS FAR AS ENTERTAINING ANYONE...THAT WAS NOT THE POINT. THE POINT WAS TO GET HELP IN TRAINING.
Pixar and Disney can help if they care to. I feel that I was not strong enough in defining their responsibility and obligation to help repair the damage to be caused by doubling demand for blue tangs and other coral fish . Fish that would stay in the ocean and their coral heads intact IF Disney did not stoke the fire and increase the demand with this film that will be known in the same way that Anaconda and 101 Dalmations were.
After the small message fades, the American way is to covet, corner and possess. Fish sales will increase.
I want someone to call from above the trade. It cannot help itself it appears and needs to hook up with serious finance to drive the reform properly.
Hey, it was fun and I sure hope there will be follow up.
We SHOULD write to Disney, MS NBC and Pixar and see bout them helping the cause.
Sincerely Steve...of AMDA. Did you get that AMDA. Yes AMDA... we want net training...Thats AMDA.

Well, I sat through 55 minutes of boring crap, but it was well worth it! Good job, Steve. How odd to see someone that I know on national tv! What's next? A industry reality show? I can see it now "10 importers stranded on a deserted island and forced to collect their own fish. Tune in every week as one gets voted off."

I am curious about one thing though...how on earth did you manage to steal this primo PR vehicle from MAC? Did MSNBC contact you through AMDA? If so, how did they find out about AMDA?

Mary,
They called a lot of people and interviewed them all. After lots of discussion a call came back and I got the nod to appear...on very short notice and had to get to the studio thru traffic.
I don't know who all they called, but one was an anti fish trade professor from U.C.Irvine.
I hope it amounts to something...like a call from Disney with an offer to help.

I came home from Cub Scout night at the Braves' game (we won!!!! - Real pressure-cooker!). My son and daughter got to parade around the field with 3000 other scouts and Ronald Young, Georgia's rescued POW hero - I was comptely and totally verklempt. This non-American felt as patriotic as any American could possibly have felt.... but I digress....

Came home late, checked my email and saw a note to catch Steve on the midnight playing of the show, and I did catch it.

What jumped out at me was the host of the show saying, "I'm not aware of cyanide fishing, what is that?" (or words to that effect) and thinking it was a great segue into a whole lot of awareness or asking of questions by people who might be into the hobby already and were also unaware.

Any ideas on how to make Disney's phone ring? Where would we begin?

Jenn,
One of the greatest criticisms of our industry is that it does little to atone for its extractive activities and environmental damage. This is where non aquarium NGO groups have an entry into our business. If we don't do it then they will. ..and when they can't figure it all out and fail...we are frustrated with them. That failure is natural and predictable. We must save our own selves...Which brings us to your question...how to make the phone ring.
TV everywhere. We have an answer for the post NEMO era. Contact your local stations and offer our group as a talking head before they get some anti fish collecting nerd geek from UC Irvine...[ who I got chosen over last nite.]
AMDA will fight, engage and be pro-active in defense of marinelife dealers better potential.
Thanks for the support, Steve

Done. Just contacted my local NBC affiliate. We'll see what happens. When I have a bit more time later, I'll try the others too. NBC is our most popular network around here.

I may not be liked for posting my opinion, but I thought his interview was lacking....
He has good intentions, but I don't think he knew how to get his message across. Those of us that know what cyanide does to fish, short term and long term, have a serious problem with it. We are all in a position now, of having emotion disliking cyanide, but joe blow American has never heard of such a thing. We as a marine keeping population can mail Disney, whoever, but if a larger number mails them, like a tv audience it would be better for our cause. Getting to the point, this is why I thought his interview was lacking. He needed, especially when Keith asked what is cyanide and why is it important, he needed to drop the propagande getting Disney on board, and put this poisoning of thousands of fish in the hearts of the viewers. Rather than doing this, he merely repeated the same thing he had said several times before. Simply we, as a population of fish lovers, rarely get an audience anywhere near the size, and especially as broad as this MSNBC audience. I honestly think his message will not do anything productive, especially compared to what it could have done..... I also doubt Disney will have any incentive to do anything. Unless we get their target concerned and voicing some opinion, they have little incentive to help.
Also Steve, Please take no offense from the critisism, but I believe it is something to serious consider if you have a venue or audience of this magnitude again....
I know this is a far cry from most of the responses to this thread, but its my opinion!

Thats right,
I totally agree with you and can only say that that little 3 minutes was up as soon as it started and it was over so soon. Developing any points with so little time would have been a good trick and then again, you never know whast the questions would be. It was totally live, unrehearsed and over in the blink of an eye. I wish also that I would have assumed no previous knowledge on the part of the viewer and would've explained what I've explained a million times...but...ya never know when the thing is going to end and it ended too quick!
Thanks, Steve

So Cosper what good do you think it will do to try and get everyone in America against the marine hobby. The movie does a pretty good job of making us look like kidnappers already. Why should the president of the American Marine Dealers Association try to pull down our pants in public without asking for money to correct the problem? If anything I think he should have pointed out some of the positive aspects of reefkeeping. It was only three minutes for crissake.
