By Gwen P. Posadas, Sun Star News Philippines
DAVAO, MINDANAO -- An American navy ship cruising along the Pacific Ocean accidentally passed a sinking Filipino fishing vessel and plucked its crew of nine from the water last Friday.
United States Navy Ship (USNS) Shasta was about 100 nautical miles east of Cape San Agustin off the coast of Davao Oriental when it came across the F/V Paradise, which had developed engine trouble and was slowly taking in water.
The crew of USNS Shasta immediately took the fisher folk on board and provided them food, water, medicine.
The fisher folk had already been without food and water for five days before the rescue.
The survivors, who are all residents of General Santos City, were identified as Carlito Ruelan, owner of the ill-fated F/V Paradise; Miguelito Puslan; Marly Mendoza: Mansing Mendoza; Ricardo Lawas: Francisco Talingting; Carlos Ruelan; Roger Ranque; and Jojo Jagme.
The crew of the USNS Shasta turned over the fisher folk to the Philippine Navy, which dispatched BRP Magat Salamat from General Santos City to fetch the men.
Philippine Navy Lt. Leonardo C. Gascon said that the Americans around 4:30 p.m. delivered the fisher folk to them.
They were then brought to Naval Station Davao in Panacan, Davao City on Saturday where they were turned-over to their respective families.
The joint rescue operation highlighted the cooperation between the Philippine Navy and the United States Navy. Sun.Star Davao
