Naesco specifically stated that industry (using his silly definition) has contributed nothing financially to MAC. That is simply wrong. If you're going to lead some reform rally, at least get your facts straight. That's all I'm saying.

I hope the 2,5 miles of netting is of good quality and is going to last a while. I know of a case of bad quality netting that didn't last 2 fishing operations, it was cheap netting!

Well, if you show up at MACNA, I'll show you a piece I saved of the 1/4" mesh netting (that I personally had sent over). This netting, used daily, should last a year or two according to those who have used it.

Whom I am referring to? Mike you know!

No, Jaime, I do not. If I knew whom you were referring to, I wouldn't have asked. It wasn't MAC now, was it?

Regards.

We all know they read all the threads on cyanide and REEForm on this forum.

Really? How exactly would you know this?

I think you have a highly inflated sense of importance.

At least I know I am but a hobbyist and that my words written here matter little to 'Industry' as you have defined them.

Regards.

In 2001, the MAC raised over $1,000,000. Some of the major donors were the Packard Foundation, MacArthur, and USAID. The industry contributed $3,500. So, industry donations (from groups like PIJAC, PFTEA, and AKKAI-Indonesian exporters) did occur. Wayne, should have said "practically nothing".

I object to the MAC taking funds from the US Government and not using the funds properly (implementation of MAC programs following their Core Standards).

Thanks for getting the correct information Peter.
"Correction"
Industry contributes practically nothing to MAC and is doing nothing about stopping the use of cyanide which is destroying the the reefs in Indonesia and the Philippines and killing the fish, coral and other creatures that live there. This must come to and end.
REEForm wants industry to make a committment to ending the use of cyanide and providing REEForm with a timeline.

Careful Naesco...your blatant ignorance is showing again. There are industry people- yes, those who are involved in the cyanide trade- who have given money to MAC. It sure is hard to take someone serious who can't even research the most basic information before making a statement about it.

Hey Mary
Dr. Peter Rubec posted that industry had contributed a paltry $3,500.00 out over over one million dollars ($1,000,000.00)
It would appear than that you did not know that they contributed next to nothing. Am I correct?

My quote which you have quoted has nothing to to do with me personally.
But to answer your question specifically:
The message of REEForm is getting out to industry. Industry is aware that REEForm is calling for an end to the use of cyanide and a timeline.
Industry is aware that unless industry agrees to REEForm's demands, REEForm will call for an immediate and total embargo on fish coming from the Philippines and Indonesia where the use of cyanide is rampant.
Industry is also aware that REEForm will call for the support of international groups like GREENPEACE in stopping the use of cyanide.

The reason I know Mike is that I hear from industry almost daily and that is what I have been told by them. Further, I have been told by some of them that industry is not only concerned about Philippine and Indonesian fish but concerned that if they do not do something, the publicity that groups like Greenpeace will bring may affect the entire industry.

Dr. Peter Rubec posted that industry had contributed a paltry $3,500.00 out over over one million dollars ($1,000,000.00)

So the only way to contribute is through MAC?

Nope. As usual you are wrong. However, I am not going to let you get away with making false statements. Do your research, Wayne. Try it sometime, it might make you look somewhat more intelligent. Having to have me or Peter do all of your leg work for you is sad.

And Rover is right. MAC is not the only way industry can contribute. Of course, short sighted people have a hard time understanding this simple fact.

Hey Mary ........whats the exporters bill for the estimated 6,000,000 [six million} fish that are sold per year? I would estimate at tenty five cents per fish the total export dollars of PI in tropical pet fishes about two million tops ........What was the dollar value for sea food exported from the Philippines last year ......thirty? Has any one ever hear of the foodfish collectors doing squat to support" REEFORM"?.............................. Lastly, if MAC collected a cool million bucks to police a two million dollar a year industry....Why dont we just pay off the collectors { that one mil can sure subsidize a lot of eight dollars a week collector salaries.............

kalk,
That's brilliant. We can pay the collectors not to collect. Sort of like we pay our farmers not to grow crops. All the dealers can just switch to freshwater and the equipment manufacturers can switch to making pond filters. Kalk has saved the reefs.

Funny thing is ........seems not only are reef hobbyists not buying very many fish in the last few years {less fish only tanks means less fish} .......but the number of wholesalers bringing in PI fish is way down....compared to even a few years years ago........Vietnam Shrilanka Tonga Fiji {did you know they shut Fiji down this week } {its back up we think}....Solomons Vanuatu Red Sea ................AFRICA! I got some AWESOME Wrasses today from Africa .......these "Other" sources are continuing to water down PI and its hold on the market ................So, the hobby and the manufacturers would most likely do just fine if PI stopped collecting for a bit..........Would it not be interesting to have hobby fish collecting cease for a spell? ..........imagine the shock and awe .........when the same amount of cyanide damage and the same number fish testing positive for cyanide...............came up again and again even without our hobby at work? Perhaps this is the only way to exculpate our hobby once and for all? Ps I learned that the Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas consumes 250,000 TONS of seafood a year......That ALONE is about the same as this hobby consumes in the same year! think a bout it?
