Steve,
Emerald crabs ( Mithrax spp) and Desjardini tangs really are effective natural controls for Valonia. Broaden your education to include knowledge on keeping marinelife as well as selling it.

Emerald crabs don't do squat other than make it loose and spread it to other rocks. This is my opinion after trying them three separate times.

After a couple of hours scrubbing LR with a stainless steel brush, I'm off to try finding a sailfin tang.

I have a Red Sea sailfin tang (see avatar). It's a gorgeous tang, but expensive in the US (paid $79.99+tax for 2.5-3" specimen). Clearly, since I don't have any green bubbles in my tank, it must be because of my tang.

Maybe an ichthyologist would care to comment as to whether the Zebrasoma desjardinii nomenclature is no longer in favor, and one should refer to them all as Zebrasoma veliferum?

Zebrasoma veliferum is the regular sailfin tang, desjardini is the Red Sea version. Unless I'm mistaken.

I believe Hy is right about the possible combining the two species into one. Desjardini will be demoted to common name status if that happens.

Bob Fenner's book says that some biologists believe that the "desjardinii" species name should be done away with, and Desjardin's tang is just a variety of the veliferum that happens to live in (or near) the Red Sea, and not its own species. That's what I'm wondering. (And, is it desjardini, or desjardinii?)

But I'm too lazy to build a DNA sequencing machine in my garage, or to try to hybridize DNA... (Besides, Johnny Cochran would make the tang put a glove on...)

Actually you all are giving poor advise again.....the algae slugs {Aplysia?} eat more bubble algae and hair algae then any tang ,hermit crabs or emeralds. How much algae can a tiny crab fit in its belly anyhow? And we have all seen the stuff that comes back out of a tang! Most tangs will eat the desirable macro algae before the nuisance algae. These seahare will actually eat the hair algae or bubble from in between the blades of caulerpa! ..............Also , that must be some really nice looking live rock you selling Steve!! Whats it called "Baja bubble"? :wink:

Valonia [ a colonial 'pest' anemone ] imported on [ banned ] Mexican live rock? I fear that is bit a sample of this thought process...and it makes one wonder about the other 150 posts of late.

Given that the only seaslug that is known to eat Valonia has a very limited range, and is not in an area generally known for collection, I doubt that it is in the hobby.

What species are you referring to anyway?

I can get the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela pretty well at any time. I've also seen them come in on another supplier's Indonesian shipments, so they may be more common than you think.

The one species that is documented to eat Valonia isn't found in Indonesia.

There may be others that eat it, but it is undocumented. It would be interesting if there were. I'm not finding this species you mention though.
Any references?
Have you seen it actually EAT the Valonia bubbles?
Or to they just pop them?

When Kalkbreath mentioned Aplysia I thought you were talking about the same genus. I've heard through a retailer (like Kalkbreath) that a customer or two has witnessed Aplysia eating Valonia. I for one have not - but will test one out for you on the next shipment.
