We're looking for another really good salesperson, but if you're working on setting up your own business I don't know who would hire you. Why train someone just to have them leave?

Sorry, but I'm not willing to put the time and energy into someone who might be leaving soon. When I hire, I hire for the long term.

Why wouldn't you want to train a future customer, Mary?
To me the best employee would be one that has their heart into it.

Good Luck with finding a job Reefsoul!

Wayne, you're just so ridiculous I can't even respond. Tell ya what. YOU open up a business in the marine ornamental industry and then hire people for the short term so you can be training future customers. How daft are you?

ReefSoul, I do wish you luck in your future endeavors.

If you treat people right, they won't leave. Give them incentives to perform. I never worried about investing time and money in a good employee. None of them left to set up shop for themselves. They didn't have to.

But I agree with you that I would be daft to be in the marine ornamental industry. It is most certainly a sunset industry. It is sad to say that but you reap what you sow.

Once again Wayne, you're WRONG. You can treat people extremely right and give them all of the incentives in the world. If they possess that entrepreneurial spirit they will leave to open their own business. Maybe it's just an American thing that you don't understand. Sorry, but if someone comes in TELLING me they're planning on leaving soon to do their own thing, then I'm not interested in wasting valuable time and effort training them. The key is to find a motivated employee that is willing to work for someone else long term. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

Pssst Mary, it's a Canadian thing too... it's just not a "Naesco" thing.

I used to work for somebody else... several other sombodies over the years, but most recently, a somebody in the trade... but I've got that American disease... "Entepeneurial Spirit" and I'm kinda loopy too...

One other point... Reefsoul didn't say what business he's aspiring to, presumably in the trade - but who is to say he wouldn't become a competitor, rather than a customer?

I would have been a competitor for my last employer, had he not gone out of business first ;)

Mary it is probably out of place for me to comment but I will do it anyway.

I noticed your new avatar. Shouldn't you be showing more respect for the President of the United States.
This is an international website and don't you think your avatar is a bit unpatriotic.

Where does it say anything about the President?

I can think of a few people here that avatar could be referencing....

I like it ;)

Quite true about the entrepeneurial Spirit. When I was working in the USA I was quite shocked at how many people had such a strong "Spirit". If I ever get the guts to open my own busines I will definately like to take some lessons in business from my friends in the USA.

Cheers,

Well, Vic, I'm a Canadian, living in the US .. If I was back in Ontario there's on way on earth I'd have been able to open my own business. The US makes things favourable for people to open their own businesses.

I'm really happy to be here :D

And we are sorry you left Jen but see that you still spell favourable correctly. Calgary Flames defeated San Jose 3-naught; the federal election will be called in a week or so and gas is almost a looney a litre. I see beautiful clear blue skys and the sun is setting over the Gulf of Georgia with the snowtopped mountains in the backgroud.

The Maple Leaf our emblem dear, the Maple Leaf forever,
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf forever.

Goodnight Jen; sweet dreams. We miss you

What ways do you think it is easier to do what you do in the USA as opposed to Canada? I know there is a lot more goverment help available.

Cheers,

WHOA........I didn't mean to start anything. both have a vailid point. i've worked in pet/fish retail stores since i was 15...and know the biz.
especially after working at octopuss garden. the owner, Ron, is such an awesome guy...and loved working for/with him. he's taught me alot and viceversa. i've informed him of my idea of my own biz... and he has given me advice, and we're able to continue being aquaitences. i've expressed to him my feelings about being competitors, and how i could never put him, or his biz down in any way. we respect each other as friends as well as competitors.
yes, i have the heart. not just for the hobby...but for the people who have the same passion for the hobby. its about the propagation of these creatures, the people who love them, and unfortunately it's also about money.

Well I don't know about government help, as such, but the Small Business Administration is awesome! I took affordable business courses with the SBA at a local university, and I can get all the follow-up help I need... they helped me tweak my business plan, looked over my lease, they have courses on marketing, budgeting... lots of resources.

The attitude here is more entrepeneur-friendly. Tax situation is DEFINITELY better ... just last year, Pres. Bush upped the dollar limit on new equipement purchases from 25K to 75K for exemption... which translates to less taxes. Cost of living is generally cheaper, economy is much better, and there's a lot less government interference.

It's not easy to put my finger on all the reasons why it's better here, but in many ways it just "feels" better. Plus the US is a nation of consumers... more so than in Canada, so more people are willing to spend on their indulgences.
