If you are talking about standardizing PLU numbers for fish, somebody has already done it.
I have a set of labels from Animal-Graphics.com and each specie has its own 3-digit number... Yellow Tang: 486, Tank Raised Ocellaris 019, Mexican Turbo Snail 693... and etc.
Some species aren't on it, but it's a good start. Many stores use these labels... the have them for freshwater, saltwater, herps and fuzzies too I believe.
It's a good launching point.
