Actually,
They're Bohemian types.
Very nice folks with a serious mission to blend big cash with conscience.
The conscience however, is an ivory tower one, reinforced by the same like-minded pseudo-eco intellects at the Packard Foundation and never tempered with real life experience.
The cash, comes from pure business people looking for a serious ROI.
The 'eco-ngo' business mixes with and competes with themselves to loot the issues for all they can. They justify whatever they do as 'better then nothing' and besides, they know better and 'care more' then crass, ruthless fish mongers that dominate the trade.
Reform elements within the trade are most inconvenient as they are a constant reminder that there are people within the trade who care...and want to make it sustainable. Instead of co-opting and employing the existing talent within the trade, they always decide to 'wing it' and fake it and hope that no one catches on. Bringing in commercial expertise would afterall, delete one of their own salaries ...and do not think for a second that their interest extends one minute beyond getting paid.
You don't pay em, they're gone in sixty seconds.
They have relized that there is more then one way to get paid in this trade. "Know nothing" consultants who have learned to flirt with and manipulate the egos of fish people, play em along and then dump em when they think they've learned enough.
So no, they're not black suited, wing-tip wearing types. They're just good eco-egg headed liberals excited about getting close to conservative wealth.
Bingo!
Steve
PS. However, the needed return on investment contemplated will drive them to buy off and buy out anything they covet. Attracted to bigger targets, they will invariably gravitate to the bigger sales venues...ie. the big box stores.
