The people that set up the new marine reef selection in the Petco in SD was most likely Coast tropicals or Aquaco. They supply most of the stores in that area as a wholesaler. The other brick and mortar stores in the same area as this particular Petco is located .......Banded together a few years back and formed A"cartel" {as they called it } to band together as a group of stores to increase those stores buying power. "Fontaines"was one of the stores. Does anyone here visit the other B&M stores that compete with this Petco?.....................................If you think the idea that Petco is entertaining the thought of going after the reef market........Keep this in mind ......the guys that started Petco , also bought out Seagrest farms the giant fish importer last year. Central pet, the giant Florida dry goods wholesaler now owns some of the big time industry manufacturers like Kent Marine , Aquarium systems, instant ocean , and such . Petco has enough money to buy a base ball stadium..........what makes you think they wont want to add to their collection and buy up the marine hobby manufacturers. I say within five years, Petco will own Kent marine , Allglass, Aquarium systems , three more big time fish importers and a foot ball stadium. ........

I actually still have credit slips to Fontaine's! They owe me like.. <adding 'em up> ... $60 worth of stuff! I sold them all my Synodontis cats, hated parting with those fish. There was a story with those fish!

Kalk, It is incorrect to state that Segrest Farms was bought out by Petco. Elwyn Segrest has informed me that his company was bought out by Meriwether Corporation a venture capital firm.

Yeah that's right Peter I remember Elwyn telling the AMDA members about it. I was sort of thinking kalk was full of it, but I couldn't remember the name of the group that bought ol' Elwyn out.

I like the way you worded that..."it is incorrect to state" ...{It depends on the meaning of "IS"} Sound familiar?..The guys that are a part of Meriwether were also part of tha original Petco founding fathers. No the connection is not direct ......but its not merely a coincidense either is it? I dont think I ever said that Petco owned Seagrest .......did I ? But just because they dont own it out right does not mean the rest of the industry is clueless as to why this Meriwether Corporation chose to add a fish importer to its portfolio..............

good point kalk...

Did you know that when the Cubs were here for a series in mid-may at PETCO park, that the second base umpire was Chuck Meriwether? sounds fishy to me 8O

Maybe........... so the partners could get aquarium fish at wholesale and not have to pay full retail at the LFS

If so, they certainly could've made a better selection than Segrest...

Yuk!

;)

I believe ol' Elwyn has the only collection station in Vanuatu as well. Elwyn is a sharp old cuss. Might be well advised not to burn any bridges. But if it's the Petco boys calling the shots now it does present a dilema.

But they got hit by the typhoon last week

Is that what flooded texas? The rain here the last week has been unreal. I was watching the news/weather last going "YAH I KNOW ITS WET OUT BUT WHAT CAUSED IT" in my head yelling at the guy on tv.

I don't think the typhoon that hit Vanuatu was what brought all that rain to Texas.

On a side note, the beau and I were looking at destinations in the Oceania region, and couldn't really find anything "direct" to Vanuatu (I want to visit, and New Caledonia is running about $3,000/seat at the moment). Is there such a thing as any type of flight other than a puddle-jumper into Vanuatu?

Did a quick check and LAX to VLI runs about $2350 on Orbitz.. - Might be a PITA to jump from LAX but might save a little.

I need to get out more, I never considered a 737 to be a puddle-jumper.

Actually (til I move to Tahoe), LAX is about a 40 minute drive for me (so much better now that the infamous 105's been opened!). :) I didn't do the checking, I was on the phone with Aragorn. Looks like we're on for Bali at the end of August.. maybe he just told me there were no flights to Vanuatu cuz he wanted Bali instead... :|

Well, I'm sure you'll have a good time regardless of where you go... You'll be leaving a lot of us green with envy behind you.

The end of Aug you'll be thinking.. "PetCo WHAT? - Pppfft!"
