Over two years ago I seriously looked at investing in a LFS. Sounded like fun having a business as a hobby and boy could i cherry pick, eh.

Even than I looked at what was happening and came to the conclusion that it could not continue and that the government would eventually step in and stop it. I decided it was a poor investment.

The surprise for me is that industry is still doing nothing.
Jenn if I were offered a position where I could use my skills in implementing reform in the industry I would jump at it.

hmmm

how do you define 'industry', and 'nothing' in the context of your post ?

there are many facets of 'industry'-which are you reffering to ?

are you aware of what all of these facets are doing or not doing ?

how are you informed as to which parts of the industry are doing what ?

I would doubt that the reason to not invest in a LFS store in the Vancouver market was not due to your crystal ball gazing. I would rather think that the real reason was due to the poor ROI on your investment.

Based on your support for such intervention to clean the industry, and knowing it would be coming, could you not operate in a manner to benefit from it? All purchases could be made from "clean" sources so youu shouldn't have any problem with any gov't restrictions. Or is it rather, because the retail market in this area is sooooo cutthroat that doing it the "right" way would just lead to a sea of red.

No Kyle, the first thing to look at in investing is the risk. If you are happy there is little risk that you look at the ROI. I had problems with the risk aspect and that is crystal ball gazing. My gut told me things like importing live rock and wild coral could not possibly continue.
I never did look at the ROI side. Had I done so I would have discussed this when we met.

Wayne, you said you want to implement your industry reform skills. I asked you what skills. Your answer?

The funny things is...you can get aquacultured rock, MAC certified rock, cultured corals, cultured fish, and clean fish from from a variety of sources. How would gov't intervention effect this unless there is a complete ban on these products, thereby, shutting the industry down?

The intent of BILL 4928 is to encourage all of the above.

IMO the Government recognizes that most of the problems listed in the preamble will be solved by an immediate ban on imports from the Philippines and Indonesia where the use of cyanide in rampant.
Certified suppliers from those islands will be exempt and the Government will provide incentives to allow for the switch from cyanide caught to net caught.

Maybe it is time you stay off for a while and join us when you are in a better frame of mind. Good advice!

Wayne, I know you want to be many things. Someone who is knowledgable about the industry, someone who matters in these issues, and a moderator. You are none of those things, so you can keep your advice directed toward me about industry issues and moderation issues to yourself. I am so tired of people who act disrespectful to others getting their panties in a knot when it comes back on them. You want to dish it out Wayne? I can take it. No problem. Like I said earlier, bring it on. But seems to me you like to dish it out and then cry foul when it's served back to you. You be 100% attitude free, cordial, and less demanding and then maybe, just maybe, you'll have a point. Until then, get the log out of your eye, mister.

The real problem with this forum is there are too many moderators....

Pssst... Wayne.... That bill is before the United States government. You, sir, are in Canada. Last time I checked, Canada was NOT a state (contrary to popular belief in some parts around here ;) ) So any legislation that passes here in the good ole U. S. of A. does not get written in stone in Canada.

You might have it all wrong... it might just be a great time to be a LFS owner in Canada because if the sky falls here as you're so sure it will, there will be a huge glut of marine ornamentals available that won't be coming here.

Just because the US passes legislation does not mean the rest of the world does too -- so all that quota that normally comes Stateside, will be up for grabs to everybody else. Prices might drop since demand will go down, but it should just mean increased profit potential if the United States is knocked out of the game.

As for industry skills, just what do you have to offer? I need somebody who can clean my pumps and skimmers and install tanks. I'm sure the wholesalers can always use somebody who can pack orders and do dead pulls and clean tanks... maintenance companies can always use another hose sucker... or maybe your thing would be sales? I've dealt with salespeople who didn't know a yellow-eyed (Kole) tang, from a Yellow tang... so it wouldn't be too hard to get on with that outfit... and believe me if anybody needs some reform-minded folks on board, it would be that one... Other than your experience as a real estate attorney, what priceless skills can you offer to me or any of my colleagues? I'm not in the market to buy a building anytime soon.

Wayne, you are a kettle calling the pot black on many levels. You call Mary out and cry foul when she challenges you, but you sit here on your high horse telling all of us who work the industry full time, how we should be doing it, how you "would" save it... statements such as you make, IMO are the most inflammatory and insulting that we see here. Whenever you are called upon to back your statements with facts, you run away.

I think some of us are gluttons for punishment - arguing with you is like watching a train wreck - we just can't help ourselves.

That is my point, Wayne. Where would the risk come in your investment if all these products were available at the time and you tailor your operation to this legislation that you foresaw two years ago? Wouldn't this be a competitive advantage over the other LFS in Vancouver because you would be ready for this new era in the industry? Your supply chain wouldn't have been effected by any legislation put forward, unless there is a total ban on MO importation. Other stores in the area wouldn't be so lucky. Then I'm sure that the hobbyists in the area would have been beating each other up to get to your "clean" store.

Ditto Jenn...Bill 4928 doesn't apply to Canada. So obviously you know of similar legislation in the works for us up here. Care to fill us Canadians in?
