Horge if you ever visit my neck of the woods, I'll be happy to treat you to a steak dinner :)

I have to concur that the proposed legislation as it stands, simply pisses on a fire.

Be careful there, Jenn...
You keep talking like that and I might become a permanent fixture of that neck of the woods...

Bring it on!

I've been looking for a good excuse to try out Ruths Cris!

A nice NY strip with sauteed mushrooms and onions, baked potato loaded with sour cream, bacon and chives, and a nice dry red wine...

Mmmm now I'm hungry....

Jenn ;)

Have you guys heard about the new healthy diet? You eat just tangs and other small tropical fish. Thing is, they have to be delivered live and in good health for the beneficial effects to remain intact. Anybody else heard of this diet?

Isn't it called "Big MAC?"

I sure hope you dont go to Ruths Chris and get a NY Strip.....Filet Mignon is their signature dish. The cowboy ribeye is great and so is the 3lb lobster.

It certainly seems that this argument is mute. Fisheries for the live food fish trade contain destructive elements, as do the fisheries for the aquarium trade. If you can make any improvements to either of them in any way, then why not?

Some years ago I heard a similar argument about whether dynamite or cyanide fishing was worse, and no-one could see the wood for the trees that they were both destructive, and if you could reduce the incidence of one of them, then that would be a step forward, despite the fact that the other may still be going on.

There will always be a destructive element to these fisheries, the hard part is to lower it to a 'negligible level. Squabbling with your "he said, she said" pettyness isn't moving anything forward. A united front (which I know will never happen, but I can dream) from those industry, government and NGO folks might actually move things forward, but until that time, the reefs will continue to suffer.

Your argument would be a good one if it weren't for the fact that fishermen are fishermen. If you ended the MO trade and all of the MO fishermen completely changed careers, then you'd probably see a little difference. However, since they are fishermen, if the MO trade ends they will go to food fishing, which is more destructive. So you end one destructive means and replace it with a more destructive one. Net benefit for the reef? Negative.

Well I've never been one for Filet Mignon -- I prefer the strip. I'm allergic to shellfish so the lobster is out.

You might be able to eat all of the strip it is not as big. I love the leftovers from the filet or cowboy ribeye. They make a mean sandwich! :) Also, get the Cheescake or Sin Cake. They are out of this world.

Poor girl. I had the best steamers and lobster this past weekend at MACNA. I must get back to the East Coast again soon.

Hahaha no worries, I have no trouble finishing a steak dinner. No doggie bags for me ;) I might not have room for dessert but I would never waste a good steak!

You know I have never been inclined to eat shellfish. I volunteered as a cleaner-upper at Oysterfest for too many years... yuck. Once Scott bought some Nova Scotia lobsters from a friend, and he made puppets out of them after he steamed them... they lost their appeal at that moment - but it was just as well I didn't taste as I would have blown up like a balloon.

A number of years ago I got brave enough to try shrimp - did not like the texture at all, the taste did nothing for me but the thing made my tongue feel three feet thick and at that moment I realized I might have an allergy. A trip to the allergist was inconclusive but given my previous reaction he suggested avoiding all shellfish and cephlopods as menu items. He said the "next" reaction could be exreme or even fatal if not treated in time.

I love food as much as anybody but nothing except maybe chocolate, is to "die for"... ;)

Mary, you have a valid point, however, MO and food fishers are not mutually exclusive, if a MO fisher sees a nice grouper go by, they will squirt that too. Fishers are fishers, and want to be. They don't want to make straw hats, that has been shown to be true. I do think though that one trade is as bad as the other in its prevalence for using cyanide. The live food industry currently trades around 20,000 metric tonnes a year, I would say a fair proportion of this is cultured fish, or captured in 'non-cyanide' areas. The numbers of fish caught using cyanide is a small percentage of the total amount traded.

I would defer to others the amount of cyanide needed to capture a 600g grouper, compared to that needed to catch a blue tang.

I still belive the argument is moot (thanks DanConnor), and that both are as bad as eachother in their practices.

Food fishers also use dynamite. MO fishers don't. I'd like to hear Horge's opinion on this. Horge, which industry do you think does the most damage to PI reefs, or do they both do about the same?

Food fishers for the local market use dynamite, agreed. Food fishers for the live trade do not, they use hook and line, and to some extent, cyanide. No point in using dynamite!

Horge's opinion would indeed be interesting, however, i think we can agree that it is all damaging, and if we could lessen one, regardless of which one, it would be an improvement.

Seriously what difference does it make?
We are vicariously liable for the damage the MO industry does.
The bill WILL CORRECT THAT.
We have no responsibility for the food fishery.
