I need blue tangs for my customers.
You and your customers don't NEED Blue tang. You WANT Blue tang.

NEED != WANT

Want and need are relative terms...

If Chip's customers WANT blue tangs, and they go to Chip to buy them, and he does not have them, the customers will probably go elsewhere to get them.

If Chip wants to satisfy his customers, he has to be in tune to what they want (there's that "want" word again).

If Chip wants to stay competitive... he NEEDS to fill the wants of his clients. He NEEDS blue tangs in this instance - if they are available. If/when they aren't... he's SOL.

I am not disputing the ethics of it, I'm not making a statement about whether it's right or wrong -- it just "IS".

The aquarium hobby is a LUXURY - nobody "NEEDS" any of it.

If no blue tangs (or any other species) are available to anybody, we're all still on an even playing field (the ethics/causes of that notwithstanding). If there are blue tangs available and somebody is arbitrarily deciding who shouldn't have them, there's a disparity. If I am making choices on a stock list, from all things AVAILABLE from a given wholesaler, and somebody at that end started deciding what I should or shouldn't have, despite what is there and available, I'd be pretty pissed off. If somebody offers advice or an opinion, that's fine - give me the option to take it or leave it, but I'd be really insulted if certain animals were arbitrarily crossed off of my order because of one individual's opinion.

JMHO of course...

couldn't have said it better, jenn :D

which raises the question, among others ....

does anyone involved in furthering a luxury hobby at the expense of the reefs, at any point in the chain, be it retail customer, or supplier, have any right to claim any moral platitudes about their part in the industry ?

just curious about folks opinions

fwiw, i think it's not a b&w yes or no answer

Well the moral platitudes are relative too...

While we all have blood on our hands, both figurative AND literal... some of us try to minimize t he damage by educating hobbyists, and being selective of our sources. That doesn't absolve us, but for me lets me look myself in the mirror.

I don't think that's what JT did. He did mention that they looked like crap when he got them in.

I do agree with the statement, Jenn.

In that case I misunderstood and I apologize, JT. Yes I wouldn't want them if they were crap. I've received "iffy" fish gratis from folks if they know I can try to nurture them ... and I've had mixed success - but at least the creature stands a chance if it lands someplace where somebody can invest a bit of time and energy in it.

I've only had 2 blues in lately - and both were fat and sassy. I still have one :)
