jenn in respose to a few posts above
far as rewatering/acclimation goes it would be minimal mabey 100 clams or 36 sps per shippment.Could be done in the climate controled vehicle.
If my flights are the same as lax in time I would not do it since it is still much shorter than a transship.
To give a example I transhipped 36 coral with a connection from lax from Bali mostly polyps, shrooms & lps 3 were stags & 1 humilis. The humilis was the only doa.I also had doa happen with sps from just a wholesaler in lax.
But the reason I want to import is to actuly possibly wholesale one day.
mabey thats nuts but its what Id love to do.
thanxs agin

Im thinking one of the main reasons is the age of atlantas port, may be wrong. As to why good stock has not been localized.
We can buy from the same exact exporters as lax wholesalers except those who claim to have their own stations.
But its easyier for me to find several exporters than wholesalers.

heres several wholesalers
SDC
PAF
MSI
UWW
ERI
Sunpet
I know more but ..
I can make a list of exporters long as my arm
& yes I am a hobbiest but have in the recent past retailed coral but stoped due to the fact that it was mainly a trial run to learn the ropes before opening under the appropriate name Tropical Marine Imports soon.
You can read feedback on ebay from a few people who I have sold to retail just before I decided to revamp my facility & website & become more commercialized.

Eenie, meenie, miny mo....
To which thread should I go....

This one seems to be the path of least resistance. ;)

Apparently you want to import directly, without going through a transshipper in LA. Honestly, I don't think that's possible into ATL on a major scale. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't live there. Your limited response probably has something to do with the fact that out of the 3ish people that have ATL experience here, only one claims to be an importer. Plus, ATL is a good 5-6 hours from the west coast, so you're never going to get a shipment in at the same time as an LA flight.

Here are some of the codes and some comments. Do a flight search into ATL to see what's available. My guess?? Not much.

Indonesia- Ships out of JKT (Jakarta) and Bali (DPS)
Solomons- Forget it. You can't ship direct. There's one company shipping out and everything comes through LA.
Tonga- Good luck. Flights to LA are sparse. Doubtful there's an easy connection to ATL.
Vietnam- I don't import from there, so I have no idea

You will need an import license from Fish & Wildlife to have your shipments cleared in ATL. Here, it costs about $200 to clear a shipment. Some people do it themselves, I use a customs broker. Also, keep in mind that frieght wise you will need to bring in a lot at once- generally at least 500kg to make the freight costs bearable. 1000kg is preferable. If Sun Pet is directly importing from Indo and, as you say, their quality is less than desirable, it could be because of the increased time in the bags. It's amazing how much of a difference the last 3-4 hours can make. If we get a shipment of Indo corals hung up at the airport for a few hours, our DOAs increase significantly. If we get them on time, we have hardly any DOA. Same with fish.

Sunpet has also operated as Finn's Aquatics. I believe that changes in owners/partnerships or whatnot has resulted in the changes in names. When I first shopped at Sunpet, the credit card slips read, "Finn's Aquatics".

Sunpet also deals with birds, herps and fuzzies. Perhaps that would explain the name change to reflect "pets" and not just "fish".

Sunpet has a triad ownership. Just like MAMTI. Finns/Marine Brokers/Marinelife of Atlanta all decided to quit fighting each other and work together. Finns used to be all fresh and reptiles. Marine Brokers was all salt and they were next door to each other. Marinelife was all salt and then went to fresh and salt. There was a reptile wholesaler right behind Marinelife. Bob, Barry, and Rick are the partners. All decent guys IME. Kalk makes it sounds like getting stuff into Atlanta is a piece of cake. I'm not surprised that hearing him brag would make others want to try it as well. Go to his store incognitio. Drive around and look at his trash cans and see where the fish boxes come from. Being stealth, follow him around when he goes to the airport and watch what he does. With a little luck you can soon be as successful as kalk. But remember you only have one year to make your fortune. Good luck.

Crud,
When did Atlanta become a NEW port? It's been there as long as I can remember.

If you have already found a transshipper, then why ask the question to begin with?

Jenn, your definately NOT the Queen of Hostility, you could be with a little more work tho:wink:

How is that possible? You can't clear customs without the F&W clearance and you can't get F&W clearance until the shipment lands and has been inspected.

And by the way, I deeply resent Jenn's coup attempt of my dynasty. I am the queen of hostility. Haven't you read my threads for pete's sake? I make Jenn look like a cuddly little teddy bear. ;)

I'm not. I do however think it will take an organized effort to defeat or at least get it amended. What concerns me is that Dr. Barbara Best of the USCRTF seems ok with the bill as is. This bill is already being introduced to both houses of the United States Congress. It started in House of Representatives July 22nd. How it got by both MAC and PIJACs radar is worrisome. This has been coming for a long time. Your energy and money might be better spent in starting a greenhouse. Go to Dr. Mac's site and see what they are doing. This is probably your smartest move IMO. Anyone getting ready to expand their saltwater sections or anything along those lines should maybe think twice about spending the money. This is the most serious threat that the industry has ever faced. I just gave you some of the best free advice you will ever get. Do with it as you will.
