I'm relatively new to the marine aquarist hobby, but I have the advantage of currently living in Malaysia.

I will be taking a week holiday to Bali in July, and I'd like to take the opportunity to visit CV Dinar or other marine collection facilities while I am there.

I've searched all over the internet and can't find any 'tours' for this type of thing. So I plan on just trying to find these places myself and hope I can get access and look around.

Does anyone know of any facilities that host this type of visitor and how I can make the arrangements? I would really like to accompany some of the actual collection and do some diving with the collectors to see what is done and follow the catch back to the facilities...

Appreciate if anyone can help me out.

As a newcomer to this hobby and trade, I am surprised that someone doesn't offer a program to tour their facilities as a tourist incentive to collect additional revenue. The direct deman for this type of thing may not be that high yet, but I can imagine any active aquarist would enjoy seeing how this collection is done and is easily worth a day of their time whilst on holiday.

Yes I do know of someone who imports from Bali and is scheduling a trip in September/Novemeber. It was planned for July but something came up. Feel free to email me regarding the trip. I believe it was $2000.00 for airfare, hotel accomidations, tours of thier 3 or 4 facilities and I believe breakfast. Another cool thing is, you get to dive for your own coral and they will ship it out to you at your expense. Hope this helps, Eric

I don't know of any specifically in Bali, but if you go ahead and contact them ahead of time and explain who you are and what you want to do, I've found that exporters will typically be happy to help you out.

I would also encourage you to see if they would be willing to let you take some photos and do a write up for one of the on-line magazines. It would be of interest to many hobbyists, I think, to see the facilities. If you can dive and collect your own, even better.

Regards.

A side note to Eric's post, you can only import those corals into the US and most other CITE's members *IF* you have the proper paperwork. Don't attempt to ship w.out it, you won't get the items and you will loose them to Customs or US F & W S.

Gresham,
Comments noted. I've already checked the requirements to take to Malaysia, but actually I think I could more easily and for a much cheaper rate arrange a bulk shipment to my LFS in Kuala Lumpur.

In any case, this trip is only a investigation. I can fly from KL to Bali for about 50USD round trip, so I could easily go back and forth to do further study if I find it is worth while...

Talk about being in the cool aid and not knowing the flavor, woops, sorry :D I missed the part that you were in Malaysia :)

Sounds like you've got a great opportunity, I wish I only had to pay $50 to fly there. I couldn't even get to Los Angeles on $50 in airfare, let alone Bali.
