By hook or by crook, the little buggers just don't seem to hold up well in the home aquarium.

the main reason seemed to me to be that most jaw keepers don't provide a nearly deep enough sand bed to allow the jaws to burrow properly

if a deep (8-12") bed is available, they should do just fine-most i've seen arrive, even if beat up abit, will accept food almost immediately-that's generally a sign that the fish will do fine, if the other requirements of the fish are met (habitat needs, etc.)

I guess the 3 dozen BSJ that I recieved in the last year, With tails, must be an anomaly. As well as the fact that virtually every single BSJ I have sold is either still alive and well or went carpet surfing due to tanks not being properly covered.

These are not a difficult animal to keep, they are actually pretty straightforward in their requirements and provided they are not picked on by a bully in tank or left in an uncovered tank I would say that there is a much greater survivability factor than that indicated in the thread.

If these fish are being collected Illegally the Wholesalers in LA are turning a blind eye and continuing to sell them anyway. I just dont see any other way these fish show up en Masse in arizona.

If you are implying that MO fish are being smuggled into AZ, sorry, not a chance. I've seen the invoices, they came from a wholesaler in LA.

The ones you know of may well be the by-catch shipments that cross in Tijuana...and on to LA & legally laundered.
Nogales. Mexicali and Tecate have all seen their share of bootleg shipments..
Embedded in shipments of shark fillet via Tecate was a huge one last year.
